It's not an either/or; SOM can provide both. The pitch count is flawed because of the degree of hits on the hitters cards, but it's hardly useless. Since, generally, the hits on hitters' cards and pitchers' cards will balance out to a certain degree, it is still useful to know if your starters are generally lasting deep into games and/or running up pitch counts too early in their games.
