More than a single initial for players with similar names

PostSat Sep 20, 2025 12:45 pm

Sometimes more than a single initial would help in identifying players with similar names.

For example, last night I played a team that had both Bobby Bonds and Barry Bonds in the lineup (cool to see father and son in the same lineup!) However, since both were listed as "B.Bonds" (even in the post-game box score, and with no link to their cards), it was hard to tell which was which during and after the games. Other examples include Dwight Evans and Darrell Evans, and Honus Wagner and Hal Wagner. There are many others. Adding another letter would solve the problem: Bo.Bonds / Ba.Bonds, Dw.Evans / Da.Evans, Ho.Wagner / Ha.Wagner, etc.

When watching the game replays, it would be nice to know exactly who is batting or pitching at any given time, rather than having to try to infer who it is by interpreting certain results.

Bumping this!

I have a team with Frank Robinson and Floyd Robinson in the starting lineup. In the game replays and in the box scores, they are both shown only as "F.Robinson". I know where they are in my own lineup, but the only way anyone else can tell which is which is if they happen to know which position each plays (which only appears in the post game box score). In this case, Frank is in RF, Floyd is in LF. If you pay attention, you can also infer which is which by where they tend to hit the ball, since Frank bats right and Floyd bats left. But it shouldn't take detective work to know who's batting where in the lineup. (And tonight, because of an injury, HAL has tinkered with my lineup, and I can't immediately tell which F.Robinson is which, batting back-to-back in the 4th and 5th slots in the lineup. So silly.)

Why does 365 include first initials in the first place? For identification, of course! But if more than one player with the same surname has the same first initial, that first initial alone does not serve that purpose.

Here's a quiz, based on a few examples I've compiled so far (there are many others out there):

Which player am I referring to in the list below?

L.Parrish
D.White
H.Wagner
D.Evans
C.Davis
B.Bonds
D.Murphy
B.Wlliams
L.Smith
B.Roberts
G.Davis
M.Alou
H.Johnson
F.Robinson
B.Robinson
D.Martinez
J.Franco
