I played in a 24 team 1980's league just before that option was removed and absolutely loved it. Sure the free agent options were limited, but I still enjoyed that format more than a 12 team league.
It's great that the 24 team league is an option in the 1970's, 1960's, etc. leagues, but I'm HOOKED on the 1980's! As enjoyable as the other leagues are, (for me) they just don't match the excitement of the 1980's!
I think there would be more free agent options in a 24 team 1980's league if the lowest salary cap of $60M was used. What I remember happening in that last 24 team 1980's league was teams loaded up on/stockpiled free agents because they knew there would be few available during the season to choose from.
Also, when the last 24 team 1980's league took place HAL logic was used with lineups, so teams were drop/adding fast and furiously due to being able to quickly identify the year. This quickly dried up the free agent pool. With lineup logic now based on $, I would think there will be less/drop adds, as teams need more time to identify player years.
Another to way to make a 24 team 1980's league work would be to create/add more 1980's players. Even if it was only 10-20 more $75 players with 1 decent year and 4 poor years or 2 decent and 3 poor I think it would be great. The additional $.75 players could be used to fill roster limits and field a playable team, without dramatically affecting the current value of players in the 1980's.
In a 24 team league it seems that a manager has to focus more on using the cards you have been dealt and less on drop/adding. I enjoy this type of league (less drop/adding in a 24 team league) and am optimistic that there are others who also enjoy playing this way. I find that it more realistically resembles real baseball.
