Path Forward for ATG card set

PostSun Dec 01, 2013 11:42 pm

Suggested criteria for ATG 8:

Once all the online game playing things get fixed, I suggest the following for the future of the ATG card set.

The card set is divided into 6 eras, 1876-1900, 1901-1925, 1926-1950, 1951-1975, 1976-2000, and 2001 on.

For each era, any franchise (accounting for franchise moves, etc.) is represented in the card set by:

(a) any batter with 50 PA and pitcher with 30 IP on the single best team for that franchise in that era.
(b) the top 18 batters (including at last 2 catchers), top 6 SP, and top 6 relief-eligible pitchers not already included in the top 6 SP, by WAR (either fangraphs or baseball-reference will do) for the franchise in that era. Players already included for having been on the best team need not be replaced. Players who played for multiple franchises within a given era would be included for any teams where they meet the above criteria.

This would provide something between 30 and 50 players for each franchise in each era. The card set would be 5000 players, more or less, but it would be far more supportive of franchise leagues, progressive franchise leagues, etc. There would be also the historical interest in the 19th century Orioles, etc.

Possibly a committee of users could be formed - I suggest, as a minimum, George Barnard and Andy Cummings be included.
