Baseball Strategy Question

Hi there,

I'm not a baseball genius- but one thing has been bugging me since Game 3 of the NLCS (the one Giants lost)
Giants are behind

I think it was the sixth or seventh inning.
Giants leadoff batter gets to second, no outs.

Jeff Kent is up.
I think he should have bunt down the first base line to advance the runner from second to third.

That would have put barry at the plate with a man on third.
He probably would have been walked- but with barry's speed, you can threaten the hit and run - which screws with the defense.

It's a lot harder to threaten the hit and run when Barry is walked and second is occupied (as is what happened).

Instead they let Kent swing and he struck out w/o advancing the runner to third.

Usually Dusty Baker plays very smart ball and manufactures runs.
I think the way to do that in that inning was to have kent sacrifice bunt. But Dusty didn't do that.

Why not?

I'll give you my two cents as a lifetime baseball guy.

First off, you've been holding onto this for a long time!

A few reasons why you don't bunt with Kent in that situation.
1. Kent couldn't bunt, he had like 10 sacrifice bunts in his whole career
2. Kent could hit, so as a manager you're looking for him to drive the ball the other way and maybe through the infield for a base hit
