Outfield Starters?

PostTue Jan 24, 2023 3:27 pm

For Left and RIght Field. Both their "E" rating and "Arm" rating are equal. The left fielder is a "3" in left and a "2" in RF. The Right is a "1" in right and a "2" in left. The question is: should you start LF=3, RF=1 or LF=2, RF=2? Aside...center fielder is an excellent defender.

You'll get more answers if you post under 20xx or All-Time Greats. But for me it's LF 3 and RF 1, by a mile. Trouble is, I don't have any actual math to back that up. Just my own preference, really.

It's very close, but playing a 2 in left and right is slightly better.

With 2s, you have fewer doubles: DO2, SI2, SI2 x2 versus DO3, DO2, DO2, SI2, SI2, SI2 and none for hit chances off of the X chart. Also, none of your doubles will advance runners 3 bases. (The number of chances for giving up any kind of hit is equal.)

It's trivial, but you also get one less chance for a fly out runners advance 1 base by playing 2s instead of 3 and 1.

From Offense vs. Defense in Strat-O-Matic
by Dean Carrano
http://www.mfooz.com/bblog/wp-content/u ... efense.pdf

Determining defensive NERP (the lower value is better defense)

Assuming e3
LF2=1.0+RF2=1.0=2.0*
LF3=3.2+RF1=-0.7=2.5

Assuming e5
LF2=1.5+RF2=1.5=3.0*
LF3=3.6+RF1=-0.2=3.4

The balanced outfield is better defensively.
