Closer usage by Hal

PostWed Nov 26, 2014 8:06 am

My closer pitched 2 days in a row - 1 inn and then 1 2/3 - the next game Hal didn't put him in to close and my shitty reliever blew the game; would pitching 2 days in a row make him unavailable in strat? Thanks - daddymac

I've seen pitchers pitch three or four days in a row at full strength, but, not too often. I'm not sure about the criteria. Might have something to do with pitch count and/or innings pitched from previous appearances. Might also have to do with which player set (e.g. 60's, 70's, 80's,90's, etc.).

I've never seen full disclosure in the online game of HAL's bullpen management technique regarding reliever rest, so, it's a bit of a mystery.

If it is a modern set (i.e. 2000-2013) your #1 closer was tired, so HAL brought in the second closer--rules are different for ATG games, though I don't know specifics.

If a reliever goes 2 days in a row he will be rested the third day, unless it is unavoidable. (extra innings maybe) If a reliever enters a third game in a row he comes in at F0.

To me, the setup man is more important than the closer in most games and a lot of times my setup man pitches two or more innings to finish a game. Setting closer usage to regular (instead of maximize) helps to get the setup man to stay in longer. A really good 2 inning endurance setup man will close a bunch of games without the use of a closer.

It's interesting that I had the opposite problem, and it cost me a recent game. I have a cheap backup closer. My regular closer was tired so in comes the number 2 guy. After one batter, HAL pulls #2 and brings in my regular closer at F0 who promptly blows the save.

I normally set my backup closer to not come out before F8 for this very reason. I prefer to go with my not-so-good #2 than have my regular closer pitch at F0. Even if my ace is as good at F0 as my #2, I'd rather get him back to fresh for the next two games. Anyway, I'm back to an F8 setting for #2, and he has since earned a save.

But, the fatigue rating isn't known until after the play is over, so, the regular closer didn't necessarily enter the game as an F0.

Here's an example of a relief pitcher from the 2013 set, Otero, who pitched in three consecutive games with no fatigue (games 13-15). Am I right to assume because it was not as a closer the "can't pitch more than two games in a row without fatigue" rule doesn't apply?

Yes, it's possible Montgomery wasn't F0 when he first came in, but he did retire the first batter, so I suspect he was F0. He certainly wasn't F9.

It's odd that HAL brought in Montgomery, but, there is no(role: closer) after his name. He could have easily have brought in Corsi or Spradlin after Righetti, but, thought a fully or partially fatigued Montgomery was a better choice.

I've never had that happen for me (that I've noticed anyway)---seems I'm incorrect. I assumed the rules followed from the CD rom versions, but the are a lot of unknown nuances and changes in the online game.

I've only played online for about 18 months, but I've played the computer games since the early DOS versions. You could create cards in the Computer versions, and there is a check mark switch when creating the card that is "can pitch when tired"---this was for pitchers like Mike Marshall in 1973 who had 208 innings in relief. I am just guessing that there are a bunch of these type cards in ATG play maybe even starters with 400 IP, but the online logic is still an enigma to me in some areas.
