pitcher hitting

just wondering if anyone else spends any intellectual or emotional energy thinking about pitchers' hitting ability in non-dh leagues.

i have an aversion to 1W pitchers in those leagues and usually place at least a little value on finding pitchers that can hit. i've had a staff bat .219 with 4hr and .239 with 3hr in seasons where i lost in the finals and won the championship, respectively, but i'm not sure my success had anything to do with that. any thoughts?

One way you could measure your success is by calculating the run value generated by the hitting of your pitchers, with the following formulas:

Offensive Runs= 0.33*W + 0.47*1B + 0.78*2B +1.09*3B + 1.44*HR - 0.1*(AB-H)

Then you deduce the earned runs allowed by the offensive runs generated by the pitchers (or add up if the offensive runs total is negative)

Earned Runs - offense Runs = Earned Runs adjusted value, which you could then transform in a new adjusted ERA

Foster' ERA = 3.18; Foster adjustedERA= 3.29
Wilson's ERA= 4.81 Wilson's adjustedERA= 4.43

Despite Wilson's splendid offensive season and Foster's horrible offensive season, it seems like Foster was the MVP in that pitching squad ;-)

Thanks for a fascinating analysis!

By that measure, Foster's pitching was superior enough to make him more valuable despite Wilson's hitting, but giving Wilson ~.4 runs per 9 would be a significant advantage over a pitcher with similar pitching results who couldn't hit. On the other hand, Wilson's .300-.338.-414 was clearly some small-sample-size-overperformance on his part, so the advantage would typically much more modest.

Don’t know how this randomly got bumped up but what a blast from the past! Look at me, a brand new player in 2016 asking questions about pitchers hitting. Adorable!
