SP/RP in Relief?

PostFri Jun 28, 2019 1:56 pm

Hal keeps bringing in the same SP/RP in relief. He is not listed in any RP roles and is a part-time starter. I have much better, rested RP's. Other than waive him, how do I stop this?

1. If he is a very cheap guy you don't want pitching, drop him for a .5 Starter only --a no pitch roster spot so to speak(.75 ATG)--if your team can meet still roster requirements.

2. Left with no direction--Hal tends to go with longer inning relievers mid game--If he is a bit more expensive--and you have the other required 5 starters--dropping him for 1 inning a RP-only might help, as they tend to be better cards for the money (but lower use).

3. Set both your middle man, setup man roles (2 guys in each role) if you haven't (you probably have them set)--they are more important than closer role in the long run. I've kind of learned to use at least 3 RP in those 4 slots--at least one middle man that isn't in a setup role too--so of your top 2 RP, at least one tends to be rested most of the time.

Other than that you can set him as mop-up, or maybe 2nd mop-up with a cheap but decent RP as 1st mop-up--Hal will still use a mop-up with a large lead as well as a large deficit, and avoids mop-ups in close games unless no other available--so setting mop-ups kind of depends on how your staff is configured--and setting mop-ups can backfire sometimes.

You can also set him for mopup and "do not use before the 8th" . This will keep him out of most games

It requires daily maintenance. But, this works very well. Go into Per-Game Starting Pitchers. Pick the three starters for the current series as already intended (essentially, no change). Then pick the SP / RP in question as starting the first game of the next series. You will have to keep rolling this forward each day. But, this will largely solve the problem of HAL bringing that guy in to relieve. It doesn't always work....
