Outfield alignment

Am I better off with a 3(0) in right (Seth Brown) and 3(-5) in center (Judge) or with Brown in center at 4(0) and Judge in right at 1(-5)? I remember reading that centerfield arm was very important, so I started Judge in center day 1, but computer subbed it the other way when I took the lead.

Play the 3 in center and right. You would give up 10 percent more X-chart hits with the 4 in center. Furthermore, as you noted in your post, it's best to have your best arm in center.

Here's how I came up with the 10 percent more hits with a 4 in center:

CF 3 has 3 chances in 216 of coming up with 6 chances in 20 of giving up a hit: 3 x 6 = 18
RF 3 has 2 chances in 216 of coming up with 6 chances in 20 of giving up a hit: 2 X 6 = 12
18 + 12 = 30 relative chances of giving up a hit

CF 4 has 3 chances in 216 of coming up with 11 chances in 20 of giving up a hit: 3 x 11 = 33
RF 1 has 2 chances in 216 of coming up with 0 chances in 20 of giving up a hit: 2 X 0 = 0
33 + 0 = 33 relative chances

Using Defensive New Estimated Runs Produced (NERP) by Dean Carrano
http://www.mfooz.com/bblog/wp-content/u ... efense.pdf

Seth Brown RF 3(0)e5, DNERP 3.6; CF 4(0)e5, DNERP 9.4

Aaron Judge RF 1(-5)e4, DNERP -0.5; CF 3(-5)e4, DNERP 3.4

So,

Brown RF 3.6 + Judge CF 3.4 = 7.0 DNERP

Brown CF 9.4 + Judge RF -0.5 = 8.9 DNERP

And these values also indicate that Brown should be used in RF and Judge in CF. Play the 3 in center and right.

NERP does not include arm ratings.

I agree with the 3/3 assessment.

However, anytime a defensive change is made at any position the AI kind of goes into an alignment sub routine when any player subs into the game. Hal will probably move Judge to RF at that point---The AI apparently only uses Range for defense alignment and ignores arm strength and errors. I Think Hal will favor the 4/1 over the 3/3 unfortunately.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately it appears that Hal switches Judge to rf every time so it is pretty much moot. Oh well.

Those switches usually happen late in the game. Consider carrying a back up good fielding CF’er and have him on the defensive sub list. Maybe hal will bring him in when he moves Judge to right.
