2016 Mystery Tourney Finals - some important notes!

PostSat Mar 26, 2016 3:40 pm

2016 Mystery Tourney Finals - some important notes:

1. **MOST IMPORTANT** Watch for posts on the Tournament Board (here), and for Private Messages (PMs)!

2. The top 12 players (i.e. points earned in events 1 through 4, with ties resolved by tiebreaker rules on tourney main page) make the final league. The winner of the final league championship series is the tourney champion. The loser of the final championship series is the runner up.

3. Choice of Decade, choice of ballpark, and rewards for order of finish (NEW for this year):

a. The choice of decade will be determined as follows:
i. The player with the most points in Events 1 to 4 may, at his choice, select the decade for the championship league (i.e. either the 60s game, the 70s game, the 80s game, or the 90s game). See comments on ballpark selections below.
ii. If the player with the most points declines to choose which game, the option then passes to the player with the second-most points. If he declines to choose, the choice passes to the player with the third-most points in events 1-4, and so on, until the decade is chosen.

b. Ballparks for championship series.
i. We will use unique ballparks for the championship event. That means that there will be 12 different ballparks used in the championship league.
ii. For whatever decade is being used, each player must choose a ballpark that is different than the one that they used in the relevant event (e.g. if the decade being played is the 70s, each player must refrain from using the ballpark that they used in Event 2, since the 70s was event 2).
iii. There will be a draft on these boards for choice of ballpark. The draft will be in order of points finish in events 1 to 4, with ties resolved by tiebreaker rules as published on the main tourney page. ***EXCEPTION*** - the player who picks the decade in 3(a) above, drops 3 spots in the ballpark draft. So, for example, if the player with the most points in events 1 to 4 makes the choice of decade, then he will pick 4th in the ballpark draft, and the players with the 2nd most, third most, and fourth most points will pick ballparks in order of 1, 2 and 3. All remaining ballpark picks will be in order of finish (most points in events 1 to 4).

4. ***TIMING*** of championship series - the choice of decade and ballpark draft will be done in an orderly fashion, with reasonable time restrictions, at the discretion of the commissioner, following the completion of the playoffs for event 4, with a further reasonable time allowance for players to enter their teams.

5. Commissioner's discretion - the commissioner resolves the right to replace a manager/player if they fail to check in for the championship series, or fail to make their ballpark selection, or fail to enter their team in the championship league.

6. Passwords - the entrants for the championship league will receive a private password, by private message, for entry into the championship league.

7. Communication - will be on the boards and/or private message only. league emails or real life emails will not be used, except at the commissioner's discretion only. Players must check the boards and private messages regularly, and must rely on these communications by boards and PM for any and all notifications.

I suggest rethinking this ruling. At least for the past two Mystery Tournaments, the tradition has been that the 12 finals qualifiers held a vote to decide the finals rules including whether the finals would include a message board draft (in which case, draft order was serpentine based on total points). I think this traditional system worked well because it was a more democratic way to decide the finals rules and it felt like it expanded the time to enjoy the finals and the 12 finalists have generally been timely players that didn't excessively hang up the time for conducting the message board draft (although the draft was time-limited which shortened last year's draft from 15 to 12 rounds).

Falcon29 (vice commish) and I will give the finals format some more thought.

That is actually what we have done the past 4 mystery tournament finals. Top 12 voted (with majority rules) on: set, DH/No DH, live draft on boards/auto draft, division format (random vs. seeded), salary cap, stadium draft/repeat, etc. Any live draft was in serpentine order of the final standings.

OK - we will do the same this year.

Main reason - when I "took the job" as commissioner, I said it would be on the condition that there are no rule changes from prior years.

So we will do it the same as in prior years.
