Both leagues are now finished with Game 120, 42 games to go. Right now, seven managers are either locks or highly likely to be in the finals: sphilipp, franky, mburatti, steadyeddie, barrmorris, gritch, and Lee300. The five remaining that are currently in the top 12: ed1447, fakesportsfan, davehaller, jaywalker, and colormeimpressed are going to have to play pretty well down the stretch. Right now, there is a 4 point gap between #12 colormeimpressed (547) and #13 djkalle (543). So, it looks like the teams from djkalle on down will need to finish strong and make the playoffs in order to qualify for the finals.
Here's a quick look at the League 1 teams that are on the bubble:
fakesportsfan is currently in a tie for 7th place (552) but are 6 games back in the West and 4 games back for the Wild Card. The Colts are last in roster value (66 mil) but half the starting rotation are .75 mil ace pitchers (Phoebus and Blass) with outstanding WHIPs of 1.22 and 1.23. McCovey and Ken Boyer are both playing well but the real star of the team is Don Demeter who is leading the team in average, HR and RBI. Perhaps the key to this team will be the late season addition of Earl Battey who is hitting great in his first 6 games. The rest of the lineup, however, looks questionable. I'll give you all 500 guesses who is the everyday right fielder. If you guessed Marvelous Marv Throneberry you would be correct.
jaywalker's Get Ready have gone 31-13 over the last 44 games to lead the West by two. But at 11th place they can't let up, they'll almost certainly need to make the playoffs to make the finals.
If the League ended today, JuicedJC's Swingers would make the playoffs (they are currently up by two for the Wild Card) but even with the 5 point bonus would be one point short of making the finals. They've scored 50 more runs than the second best hitting team. The pitching staff is led by Marichal (3.16 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) and the huge run support allows some mediocre pitchers to be effective (Ken Johnson is 11-4 with a 4.54 ERA and Clay Carroll is 2-1 and 11 saves to only 2 blow saves despite a 1.58 WHIP). The Swingers have got to play well enough to make the playoffs and may need a teence more than that.
The next 3 teams are all in the East Division of League 1 that currently has a 3-way tie for first at 61-59 and djkalle just 2 back at 59-61. barrmorris is nearly certain to make the finals but the other teams in the East must make the plaoffs to make the finals. djkalle is currently ranked 13th, 4 games back of making the finals. Frank Robinson batting a miserable .237 is bad luck. But free agent retread Willie Stargell is killing it with a .679 SLG%. Waynick's Waterloo Whiskers have won 7 of the last 9 to charge into a tie for first. Also, a late season trade for Groat and Conigliaro improves the Whiskers lineup against lefty pitching for the stretch run. jaysanders' Can't Get looks like the top team in the league with '64 Boog (47 HR in 371AB) and '69 Petrocelli. '69 Petrocelli is the 60s version of ARod. '69 Petrocelli has a .992 OPS while Petrocelli's other 4 cards have an OPS of .750 or less. jaysanders needs to capitalize on Petrocelli's great year and win the division to close the 8 point gap for 12th place.
Lastly, TallEd is 5 back in the Central and 13 points behind in the race to make the finals. A six game losing streak and long injuries to ace Luis Tiant (2.65 ERA) and offensive leader Bob Allison have put the team in a near desperate situation.
At this point, it looks nearly impossible for a team to make the finals by winning a world series and not have enough points to make the top 12. Any team winning a world series is nearly certain to have enough points to be in the top 12.
