Final 12 predictions/possibilities

PostWed Apr 22, 2015 1:20 pm

It looks like we have many first round series in the 80's playoffs that are locked at 2-2. Some of the teams that lose their game #5 will be eliminated but as of right now I see 30 owners that have a possibility to make the Final 12.

Locks (could go 10-20 in the last 30 games in the 90's and not make the 90's playoffs and still make it)

franky35
jomboy78
pushpin76
sphilipp8
voovits

Almost locks (would probably have to go 10-20 in the 90's to miss the playoffs)

gordiehowe
hallerose

I believe everyone is fighting for 5 playoff spots. If everyone in the running went 20-10 in the 90's and won championships in their current 80's playoffs and then another championship in the 90's playoffs, the final 5 teams would be:

Delbird
TallEd
Jimmy_C
Rjnewman
canauscot

Those sitting in the current top 12 have the advantage because they have already scored the points (mburatti76, NYY82602, jcheney). Others who have a real possibility are waynick, Great Unwashed, WJS6768, tgmfp, and Dinsdale. I'm not listing all of the 30 possible owners but the ones that really need a miracle to come from being ranked near 40 now are chess2899, myself, unclerowser (may need to go 25-5 with that great 90's team) and azcsuram.

Just for the fun of it, my prediction includes the first 7 teams mentioned plus

canauscot
TallEd
waynick
rjnewman
NYY82602

Someone could certainly go 25-5 and jump in here or, egads, go 5-25 and drop out. We will know a little more after tonight. Last year, the last couple spots seemed to open up as teams narrowly missed the 90's playoffs or lost in the first round of the 90's playoffs. Good luck to everyone.

Did I leave anyone out? Do you have a different analysis/prediction?

Three of us got eliminated by losing game #5 tonight in the 80's playoffs. killermarc and Mike Scott beat me 1-0. You could argue I lost because of a coin flip. We had the same record, the same head-to-head and the same run differential. We got to play game #5 in the Astrodome instead of Riverfront.

at this point, I'd add hallerose to the lock category and mburatti to near lock. My nemesis in many playoffs over the years, JimmyC, is going to need a hot streak down the wire to make the final 12.

I'm trying Franky. HAL is pounding me with injuries in the 90's. My team has had 140 injury days. The entire rest of the league is at an average of 77.1. If my guys can stay healthy down the stretch I have an outside chance.

with only 9 regular season games left, the final 12 is coming into focus. There is a big gap between the 7th ranked owner and the 8th ranked owner. So, the top 7 ranked owners have clinched a spot in the championship league. That leaves 5 spots and about 11 teams with a reasonable shot at making one of those spots. TallEd (currently ranked 8th) is looking in good shape since he's already clinched a playoff spot in his 90s league. Other teams competing for the final 5 spots that have clinched in the 90s are RJNewman, canauscot, NYY82602, and Great Unwashed. jcheney and WJS6768 have slight leads for a 90s playoff spot and JimmyC, mburatti, Delbird, and waynick are slightly behind and will need to rally to qualify for the 90s playoffs and a chance to compete for one of the final 5 spots.

I'll also point out that GordieHowe (clinched) and RJNewman (looking likely for a final 12 spot) are both pretty new to the Mystery game. They played in a handful of leagues before entering the tournament. In those pre-tournament leagues, they got some coaching from a vet on how to read injuries, etc. which I think is a smart way to get a fast start in winning in the mystery format.

The 4th and final regular season of the Mystery Tournament is in the books. Thanks again to Mike (Ducky) for such a well run tournament.

There are now only a maximum of 10 points left for any team. So, the top 8 including TallEd have clinched.
RJNewman is currently in the 9th spot and would clinch with a playoff series win or a playoff semifinals series loss by any of canauscot, NYY82602, Great Unwashed, or jcheney .
canauscot is currently #10 and would clinch a playoff series win or a playoff semifinals series loss by any of NYY82602, Great Unwashed, or jcheney.
NYY82602 and jcheney control their own destiny and clinch with a world series win. They would also clinch with a playoff semifinals series win if Great Unwashed does not win the world series.
If the final 12 were determined today, JimmyC would be in, since both JimmyC and jcheney have a championship while NYY82602 does not. JimmyC could still make the final 12 with playoff semifinals series losses by any two of (YY82602, Great Unwashed, and jcheney) plus dinsdale not winning the world series (or a dinsdale championship and 3 playoff semifinals series losses by YY82602, Great Unwashed, and jcheney)
Great Unwashed needs to win their playoff semifinals series and have a playoff semifinals series loss by either NYY82602, or jcheney.
Finally, Dinsdale could qualify with a world series victory and playoff semifinals series losses by any two of YY82602, Great Unwashed, and jcheney.

As a disclaimer - this is how I read the standings but my analysis is not official. Let me know if I missed someone.

I believe you got it right. Also, I think dinsdale and Great Unwashed meet in the first round of the playoffs, making Jimmy_C's threading the needle into the Final 12 even more interesting.

RJNewman grabbed the 9th spot with a playoff series win. So, 3 spots left.

canauscot lost, and will need to see whether one of the other competitors loses their playoff series.

You know what's funny? I am down 3-2 in my 90s playoff series, so I could easily lose in the first round. If I had not won the first round of the playoffs in my 80s series, I would have made the final 12 with 3 playoff appearances and 0 finals appearances. That would have meant me dropping out of the finals due to not having any credits and not being able to afford to buy any at the moment.
heck I'm only in the tournament in the first place because someone was generous enough to donate the credits to my account.

Wow, what a night this will be. As Jimmy_C and canauscot bite their nails with several TV's on all the games as we have the deciding Game 7 for NYY82602, jcheney, Great Unwashed, and dinsdale. We could know the Final 12 tonight or it may depend on the Championships for the 90's. Good luck everyone.
