The key fact is that each player is "on" only 1 of their five seasons and, for each player, that season doesn't change all season. So, an important component of the game is to figure out which season each player is "on."
Note that an old strategy to figure out player years was to leave lineups blank and let the computer set your lineup; the computer algorithm was changed so that strategy doesn't work. So, don't leave your lineups blank, it won't help you.
Also, if you have questions during the season, you can ask veteran players in your league. Most will be happy to help.
