Suppose the Blue Jays were to call up Pat Venditte, and HAL was not programmed with the MLB switch-pitcher rule. Assuming HAL does not require him to declare a hand, as soon as Venditte faced a switchhitter, would HAL go into an endless loop of pitcher and batter changing hands and therefore freeze the game?
Think about it.
(It isn't necessary to tell me that Venditte is listed only as a lefthander. This is satire, though last night when I photographed him pitching against the Syracuse Chiefs, he is still throwing with each hand.)
