Pre War Infielders -- NO CARD Edition

PostSat Feb 23, 2019 10:08 pm

Many have said that we don't know what we are getting when we nominate cards, so I've taken some time to put some stats together from some cards, using Diamond Dope and Veterans 1975 for the park, since it's kind of neutral (10,10,10,10). I asked Bill for his permission/blessing to do this. So I'll be posting some card add ideas, thoughts, etc to hopefully keep interest up and give folks some stuff to actually discuss on the boards.

Here are some Infield prospects from the Pre-War years who currently have no cards in ATG.

1929 Dale Alexander, DET, Bats R, E Balance, 1b-4e17
LH--7.6 2b, 3.4 3b, 7.7 HR, 7 BB 427/469/802, 1.271 OPS
RH--7.5 2b, 3.4 3b, 7.4 HR, 7 BB 418/461/782, 1.243 OPS
Alexander was a can't-miss superstar his first 3 seasons in MLB, leading the league in hits in 1929 and winning the batting title in 1932 with the Red Sox. Quite an offensive force.
He injured his leg in 1933 and the training staff tried a new deep-heat method to try to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and thereby speed healing: diathermy. However, they left it on for too long and burned his leg. Amputation was feared, but the leg improved enough for that not to be necessary. The leg atrophied, however, and Alexander never returned to the majors.
His career batting average was .331.

1926 Les Bell, STL, Bats R, E Balance, 3b-3e21
LH--5.6 2b, 3.4 3b, 5.2 HR, 9 BB 395/451/684, 1.185 OPS
RH--5.8 2b, 3.4 3b, 5.2 HR, 9 BB 389/446/677, 1.123 OPS
Finished 6th in MVP Voting for the World Series Champion Cardinals, a team that had Bottomley, Hornsby, Hafey, and Pete Alexander.

1922 Charlie Hollocher, CHC, Bats L, E Balance, SS-2e30
LH--7.3 2b, 1.2 3b, 0 HR, 10 BB 407/467/506, .973 OPS
RH--7.3 2b, 1.2 3b, 0 HR, 10 BB 407/467/506, .973 OPS
SS for the Cubs from 1918-1923, batted .340.
There is a lack of Left Handed SS in ATG.

1935 Billy Rogell, DET, Bats R, E Balance, SS-2e24
LH--2.4 2b, 2.5 3b, 0.6 HR, 15 BB 289/394/390, .784 OPS
RH--2.4 2b, 2.6 3b, 0.6 HR, 19 BB 302/431/407, .838 OPS
Tigers shortstop in the 1930s, World Series in 1934 & 1935, 9 year DP combo with Charlie Gehringer.
Has good OBP, would be a nice, cheap alternative in smaller cap leagues.

1930 Joe Stripp, CIN, Bats R, 1R Balance, 3b-3e12 / 1b-4e7
LH--2.3 2b, 1.8 3b, 1.5 HR, 24 BB 280/447/405, .852 OPS
RH--11.9 2b, 1 3b, 1.5 HR, 9 BB 331/393/518, .911 OPS
Good OBP vs LHP, Lots of doubles vs RHP

1924 Specs Toporcer, STL, Bats L, 5R Balance, 3b-4e12, SS-4e52, 2b-4e65
LH--1.25 2b, 0 3b, 0 HR, 0 BB 220/249/232, .481 OPS
RH--5.6 2b, 2.2 3b, 1.3 HR, 4 BB 373/419/513, .932 OPS
Infielder for the 1920s Cardinals, Nice cheaper platoon option...….

1930 Eddie Marshall, NYG, Bats-R, 3L Balance, SS-3e44, 2b-4e11, 3b-4e37
LH--0 2b, 1.6 3b, 0 HR, 10 BB 411/471/444, .915 OPS
RH--0 2b, 1.4 3b, 0 HR, 0 BB 286/293/312, .605 OPS
Has a combined 658 At Bats in 4 seasons. Has some hits vs LHP. Can't really play anywhere. Not worth it to me....

Lew Fonseca, Cleveland. 1929, .369 AL batting champion. .995 fielding. No Card. Like Moose Alexander, it would be nice to see historic cards available. Side note, Fonseca was the 1st manager to use film as a tool, and did the 1st World Series highlight films.

1929 Lew Fonseca, CLE, Bats-R, E Balance, 1b-3e8
LH--9.3 2b, 4 3b, 1.3 HR, 7 BB 481/520/694, 1.213 OPS
RH--9 2b, 3.9 3b, 1.3 HR, 7 BB 460/500/666, 1.166 OPS
Led League in Bating Average in 1929. Lifetime .300 hitter...……..

1928 Del Bissonette, BKN, Bats-L, E Balance, 1b-3e19
LH--4.6 2b, 3.2 3b, 7.2 HR, 13 BB 391/470/738, 1.208 OPS
RH--4.6 2b, 3.2 3b, 7.2 HR, 13 BB 391/470/738, 1.208 OPS
Had four promising seasons, was oft-injured after that, but his rookie year was outstanding.

1922 Ray Grimes, CHC, Bats-R, E Balance, 1b-4e21
LH--11.3 2b, 3 3b, 3.8 HR, 18 BB 441/539/761, 1.301 OPS
RH--10.8 HR, 3 3b, 3.6 HR, 18 BB 429/529/739, 1.268 OPS
My least favorite of these 3. Fonseca and Bissonette were better longer. Grimes had only two seasons as a starter.
