Needed: More Cheap 1B w/ A Little Power

PostSun Nov 30, 2025 4:32 pm

There is a quite noticeable shortage of sub-$1M (or just over) cards that qualify at 1B and that bat L or S with a moderate slice of HR or XBH power. To stay under $1M, I would expect such a card to be counter-balanced by a cast iron glove, dreadful OBP, speed at an uphill molasses rating, and/or a high injury rating.

The ideal adds would have a 4 or 3 (or better!) defense rating and slanted moderately toward RHP.

I realize that 1B historically is a high-offense position, and woe to the MLB team that doesn't have a run producer there. Such cards for regular 1Bmen of course would be priced much more than $1M. But there must be some cards that potentially fit the profile. Perhaps among players whose primary position is elsewhere but that qualify at 1B.

As hard as it has become to get Strat-o-matic to issue us new cards, it is unlikely we will ever see a batch of new cards for players with under the minimum 275 at bats. I am guessing such a batch to be where we might find cards like those I'm seeking.

Possible candidates currently w/o ATG cards:
    Franklin Stubbs
    Daryle Ward
    Pat Putnam
    Mike Laga
    Mike Jacobs
    Jim Holt
    Mike Kingery
    John Mabry
    Larry Biitner
    Justin Smoak (Toronto years)
    Marty Keough
    John Vander Wal
    Lucas Duda
    Ed Kirkpatrick
    Todd Benzinger
    Len Gabrielson

Hoping these names frame the profile of what I think is missing. Any other ideas?

Dalbec's profile is exactly what I'm thinking of, Mattw, but I feel the need is more acute for lefty or switch hitters.

Toglia '25 might nail it! And Matt Adams had a few years that look to fill the bill.

Mitch Moreland
Brandon Moss
Pedro Alvarez
Adam Dunn
And some of Ryan Howard’s down years would probably fit this also
