Strat-O-Matic Baseball 365

Many have said that we don't know what we are getting when we nominate cards, so I've taken some time to put some stats together from some cards, using Diamond Dope and Veterans 1975 for the park, since it's kind of neutral (10,10,10,10). I asked Bill for his permission/blessing to do this. So I'll be posting some card add ideas, thoughts, etc to hopefully keep interest up and give folks some stuff to actually discuss on the boards.

My Goals on IMPROVEMENTS:
1--Provide a card that is more representative of a player's career than their current card(s)
2--Provide a card that is fundamentally different than their current cards

Finished 3rd in MVP Voting, Led League in Doubles, better than the 1987 card and more representative of what he was for almost a decade. This is also one of those unique cards that is balanced in an unbalanced way: lots of HR power vs LHP, lots of Doubles and OBP vs RHP.

Great leadoff guy for the O's for more than a decade. His other cards are not representative of his career. This card is better offensively than his 1980 card, plus he can play LF (his 1980 card is only eligible in CF and is not great on defense). He can work on those RHP, imagine a platoon with Gene Clines, etc

Dodgers starting CF for 12 seasons, not greatly represented, Nice add for Dodgers and small ball teams. He has some other similar cards that could be considered, BUT he is only a 1 at CF in this one, making it the one that we'd need.

Both of The Hawk's CF cards are unbalanced. This one has flat out AMAZING HR totals for him. Great defense, great speed, Power vs both sides. Only downside is, it's a strike shortened Injury card, but it is an awesome add. Finished 2nd in the MVP Voting.

This card is balance and has no injury issues. It is not as awesome as 81, but it does give a Balanced Dawson instead of one that's either just strong vs LHP or just strong vs RHP.

With all the guys getting in, Dewey should be in the HOF. This is a great card. Led League in RBI, 4th in MVP voting. It has the defense, and it has more power and hitting than the current 1984 card. This card is better than the 1981 season, plus it doesn't have 81's injury problems.

I don't even want to do this card. It is so much of an outlier for his career, numbers he never even came close to again, and put up over only half a season.

I think the 2002 current card is better. The 1999 has better defense and can be used in more places. The offense is just on the side of 2002, except for a slightly better vs LH line. But that line doesn't make up for the difference vs RH.
2002 is probably Giles best season.

That'd be a very welcome addition, it's fundamentally different than the 68 card, plus it's better all the way around. 1969 is just as good vs RHP as 1968, and 1969 is much better vs LHP.

1997 David Justice, Indians, RF, LF 4(0) e4, Bats L 1L .329 33 101 .418 .596 1.013 Career highs in Hits, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS & OPS+. Justice had a fine career and I always thought that it was an injustice that he doesn't have a better card. This card is just as good against lefties as it is against righties. Obviously a DH, likely bargain priced somewhere between than the newly added 1979 Oscar Gamble card and the 1987 Kal Daniels due to similar numbers and poor defense, the same injury rating as Daniels, but better performance against lefties than Daniels.

1998 Eric Davis, Orioles, RF, CF 3(+1) e3, Bats R, 2R .327 28 89 .388 .582 .970. After missing the entire 1995 season to fight cancer, Davis came back in his mid 30s to play five more seasons. 1998 at age 36 was the best of those seasons. He posted career highs in Hits & BA and near career highs in OBP, SLG, OPS & OPS+. Unlike his other cards, this Davis card can actually hit righties. Likely bargain priced, as he has a 2 injury rating.

1997 is a good offensive year for Justice. For better Braves cards, I also like the above 1990 card with its big balance toward LHP, not many cards like that in the set. Also like that 1994 card with his best career OBP and plenty of power vs RHP.

1984 Dave Winfield, Yankees, LF, RF 1(-5) e2, CF 3(-5) e2 .340 19 100 .393 .515 .908 Career highs in Hits & BA; One of Winfield's best seasons for DO, OBP & OPS. This card is similar to the Clemente cards, but without the 15 game injury drama. If you like to play smallball, 1984 Winfield would be perfect for LF, especially at caps of $100 mil or more, since the only other players who are 1(-5) in LF are Meusel and Dihigo, and Winfield's card is better, both offensively and defensively.

1986 Jesse Barfield, Blue Jays, RF 1(-5) e3, CF 2(-5) e3 .289 40 108 .368 .559 .927 Career highs in BA, DO, HR, RBI, SLG, OPS & 2nd best career high in OBP. Won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger. Barfield was a good player for many years, and hit 40 HRs in a season in the pre-steroid era.

1974 Rick Monday, Cubs CF 1(-1) Bats L .294 20 58 .375 .467 .842. Monday had a fine 19 year big league career with the A's, Cubs and Dodgers and this was his career high BA as a regular at a time when hitting .294 meant that you were a good hitter. The Cubs are woefully short on good lefty sticks and Monday hit .313 vs lefties that year and .285 against righties. This card would be an improvement over Monday's 1975 card, where he hit just .267. The Cubs are in need of good lefty bats in franchise league play, and Monday would help.


1972 Joe Rudi, LF, 1(0) e2 A's Bats R .305 19 75 .345 .486 .830. Led AL in hits and 3B. Career highs in PA, R, H, 3B, TB, OBP, OPS & OPS+. Near career highs in BA, 2B, HR, BB. 2nd in MVP voting behind Dick Allen. In 1972, the strike shortened year of the pitcher, Rudi had his finest season, despite playing in cavernous Oakland Alameda Coliseum. A major cog in those A's teams that won 3 straight world championships, Rudi was considered the most underrated player in baseball. A fine fielder, Rudi never put up gaudy numbers or was flashy, but did all the little things to help his team win. This would be a great improvement over Rudi's 1976 card.

Played all 154 games for the Red Sox, so likely bullet proof. Retired prematurely because of fear of flying and to spend more time with his family. I've never quite understood why Jensen gets virtually no mention for an upgraded card. This card would help the Post War BoSox in franchise leagues.

1971 Tony Oliva, Twins RF, 2(-2) Bats L .337 22 81 .369 .546. 915 Led AL in BA & SLG. Career high in BA & OPS+ and near career highs in OBP, SLG & OPS. Was the last great season of Oliva's illustrious career before a serious knee injury turned him into a DH, shortened his career and took away his HOF chances. A 5R monster! Check it out!

1968 Willie Mays, Giants .289 23 79 .372 .488. At 37 years of age, father time had begun to take his toll on the great Say Hey Kid, but even at his advanced age in the year of the pitcher, Mays put up good enough numbers to rank among the league leaders in most offensive categories. Mays played in 148 games and won his last Gold Glove. While technically not an improvement over his other cards, wouldn't it be great to have this very good and lower priced Mays card to play CF for the Giants in expansion franchise leagues?
