POLL: What about Lou Brock?

PostFri Mar 01, 2019 10:37 pm

Lou Brock usually disappoints. Bad defense and usually not a lot of OBP.
Below I'll list two other options: 1967 and 1971. Then I'll list his current cards.

1967 Brock, STL, Bats-L, 4R Balance, LF-2(+1)e14, Steal: *2-6,11/-(18-15)
LH--3.3 2b, 2.3 3b, 3.5 HR, 0 BB 243/257/414, .671 OPS
RH--7 2b, 2.8 3b, 5.4 HR, 0 BB 404/415/674, 1.089 OPS
Led League in Steals and Runs, 7th in MVP Vote, had 325 Total Bases. He didn’t worry about taking a walk, hitting with more power than the 1964 card but not quite as good an average.

1971 Brock, STL, Bats-L, 2R Balance, LF/RF-3(+1)e16, Steal: *2-6/-(18-15)
LH--5.6 2b, 0 3b, 2.7 HR, 8 BB 319/369/457, .826 OPS
RH--7.6 2b, 2 3b, 1 HR, 16 BB 389/480/545, 1.024 OPS
Led League in Steals and Runs, 13th in MVP Vote. Looks like it would be his most balanced card. That RHP OBP is his best of all.

Current Brock cards:
1964 Brock, STL, Bats-L, 3R Balance, LF/RF-3(+1)e16, CF-4(+1)e16 Steal: *2-6,11/-(17-14), 3.37m card
LH--5.6 2b, 2.4 3b, 1 HR, 6 BB 312/356/445, .801 OPS
RH--5 2b, 2.8 3b, 2.8 HR, 5 BB 419/451/603, 1.054 OPS
10th in MVP Vote. I like this card and probably the one I use most when I use Brock.

1970 Brock, STL, Bats-L, 2R Balance, LF-2(+1)e11, RF-3(+1)e11 Steal: *3-6/-(18-14), 3.41m card
LH--0 2b, 0.4 3b, 0.5 HR, 7 BB 332/375/355, .730 OPS
RH--6.8 2b, 0.6 3b, 2.5 HR, 4 BB 380/403/528, .931 OPS

1974 Brock, STL, Bats-L, 3R Balance, LF-4(+1)e12, Steal: *3-7/-(20-16), 3.01m card
LH--2.9 2b, 0 3b, 0 HR, 5 BB 309/348/337, .685 OPS
RH--3.8 2b, 2.3 3b, 1.5 HR, 6 BB 402/441/529, .970 OPS
The Steals Season. 118 Stolen Bases. And it looks like that’s about all he was worried about.

Seems like he should be better. I think he had a 2 in 1968, but that was back when I played the actual game. I wouldn't mind drafting him.

Brock was a star because
1. Nobody knew what OBP was then
2. He was AWESOME in the post season
3. He stole a lot of bases

Had over 3000 hits in 19 seasons. Batted over .300 in his final season at age 40.

In contrast Joe Morgan played 22 seasons and only had 2500+ hits. Batted .244 in his final season at age 40.

Lou never met a pitch he didn't like!

Brock OBP .343 SLG .410
Morgan OBP .392 SLG .427

SB's? Brock stole more bases, at an excellent 75.3 % success rate, compared with 80.9 % (that's not a typo) for little Joe.

Then, on defense, we have a good left fielder vs a gold glove 2bman

The vote needs a "None of the above" option. We already have enough Lou Brock cards.

Comparing your apples to my oranges.............???

Just refuting your contention that Brock was only a star for the three reasons you stated above.
