Hi all,
These are great questions, and I would love to see someone from Strat weigh in but in their absence I can pass along some things that I've noticed. Yes, the defensive line does impact your opponent's running game. See the thread posted by Paddy and look at his team's games. The defensive line had a string of losses where the opponent gained 200+ yards.
I've had teams with strong defensive lines and they'll still have bad days but overall they get good results. The same goes for defensive backs and your opponent's passing game. Good defensive backs usually keep opposing passers from killing you with 300 passing yards in a game.
Linebackers are harder to relate directly to rushing or passing yards. All we can do is observe and share info with each other. I do the same things that you're describing. At least one or two guys with a 6 next to their name, and a couple of very good pass rushers in my defense.
Good luck to all!
