Using SP's as PH's in online game?

PostThu Mar 20, 2014 10:43 am

I'm in an online no-DH league and want to use a couple of good hitting SP's as PH's. But the system doesn't seem to allow this in the strategy settings. Am I missing something, or is this not an option? Can someone help please? Thanks

I don't think you can specify a pitcher as a pinch hitter on the team strategy page, but...

HAL will actually use a pitcher as a pinch hitter on occassion. This happened for my opponent in a no DH game - intentionally on his part, but at Hal's own initiative. I'll find a link to the game later , as well as that manager's team page for that team of his. Right now I'm on my phone, so I'll post it later today.

With the new stat tracking for pinch hits, it should show how many times that pitched was used as a pinch hitter, I think.

The pitcher that he used for this purpose was Zach Duke in the 2011 card set.

I looked at the team pages. Unfortunately it doesn't give stats for pitcher's pinch hitting (I guess that's a reasonable omission!).

But it does show that Duke had 45 plate appearances. He appeared in 50 games as a pitcher - 18 as a started and 32 in relief. It's worth noting that he was probably used primarily as a lefty specialist in his relief appearances, so he probably didn't have many at bats as a reliever. If he had 2 plate appearances per game as a starter, that would be 36. If he had maybe 4 more plate appearance as a reliever, that would suggest approximately 5 at bats as a pinch hitter.

Like I said, I can vouch that it did happen against me. In emails with the manager, he confirmed that this was a planned strategy on his part - that HAL would choose to use Duke as a pinch hitter.

You could PM the manager if you want to discuss it with him some more, or ask him to post his thoughts here. His user name is MichaelRobb11 . He's a very cagey (good!) manager, by the way!!!

Actually it's all lower case - michaelrobb11 .

Duke's slash line as a hitter was .220/.283/.244

By experience I learned pitcher pinch hits do not show up in the team totals. Be careful to note any omissions in case run differential tie breaker comes into play.
