Well, I went out and got swept promptly after posting the topic...! Like they sang in the 1982 April Wine song..."If you see Kay..."

I don't know that it's necessary to split hairs on pitching, fielding and hitting. It appears the Fangraphs site does factor in fielding, as guys like Machado and Victorino score very high. It looks like they might be using this version (includes baserunning, too):

Remember luckyman's rating system? Or currently, think of Joe the Jet's rating system...I don't know if WAR is necessarily objective, subjective, both or neither, to me it's just a "rating system." I think with any rating system you can squeeze out value because in effect all it's saying is "my rating system values this" versus SOM's pricing system which is valuing something else. WAR (for hitters), at least the WAR I'm looking at at Fangraphs, seems to value fielding and the hitting of doubles above all else. I'm perfectly happy to see if that alone produces value - heck, I've found value pursuing things much less esoteric than this!

kihoover: thanks! If you get a chance, report back to us. Creating custom player lists is cumbersome, but for the most part pretty easy. Before jumping in with both feet I should have number-crunched a league or two of my own, just to see what it might look like. The problem is, if you don't set out to exploit it, there might not be anything to see, as every team's WAR could be somewhere around average (the 12 teams of All-Stars effect).
