Scherzer wins game...as pinch-hitter.

Pinch-hitting for Yu Davish, Max Scherzer hits a bases-loaded double to give Darvish the 3-1 victory. Didn't one of the A's starters in the 1970s do some pinch-hitting (Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, Blue Moon Odom each come to mind; pretty sure it wasn't Holtzman.)?

Sadly, Scherzer's pitcher hitting stats got no love for the hit...he still sits as having 0 RBI for the season.

I don't know about the A's, but Don "Caveman" Robinson definitely pinch hit for the Giants in 90 and 91, when he won Silver Sluggers. I'm pretty sure Livan Hernandez pinch hit a few times in 99-02 for them too, but I'll have to verify that. Mike Hampton is another guy from that era who had to have pinch-hit at least once; he was easily the best hitting pitcher of his time. Carlos Zambrano was an excellent hitter, but a terrible pinch hitter; apparently the pressure wilted the troubled soul. Brooks Kieschnick, an all-American hitter/pitcher, pitched and pinch-hit for the Brewers in 2003 and only did the latter well. And Micah Owings, who was also an excellent college hitter, also probably pinch hit a few times, so I'll check that out.

As for older pitchers, I know Don Newcombe and Walter Johnson were used as pinch hitters often and were pretty good at it. Those who have better knowledge of old baseball than I could surely add to the list.

Sadly, of the group you mentioned, I am closer to Big Train Johnson than I am Brooks Kieschnick (who I thought was an OF for some reason--probably a past SOM set)!

Kieschnick did play outfield, too, for the Cubs, Reds, and Brewers. Like John Van Benschoten at Kent State and Darren Dreifort at Wichita St. in the 90's, Kieschnick was an enigma for teams scouting him; there was no consensus on him being a pitcher or a hitter. Unfortunately for Kieschnick (and, even moreso, Van Benschoten), he didn't have that considerable pitching ability Dreifort had to save him from confusion and mediocrity.

It didn't save Dreifort from mediocrity either, but at least he made big bucks while being mediocre...

I wouldn't think this would affect run differential. All the baserunners were hitters, so the runs should appear in their totals, and Scherzer was stranded so he had no run to count.

Ok, that makes sense. I once had Dave Boswell hit a PH homerun and his run didn't count.

Another good hitting pitcher was Earl Wilson in the late '60's for Detroit. Hit a number of HR and often pinch-hit. Even had OPS > .800 one season.
