True, I fully expect a lot of players to be unsurprising 3s and not worthy of any alarm or complaining. I was mostly just critiquing one particular instance where it seemed almost all the metrics (and the eye test - though I only watched a few Phillies games on TV) suggested a top defender at 2B. I wouldn't have even mentioned anything if he was a 2. And I do want to put it out there that I am *not* a Phillies fan, but yes I do have him in a keeper league so have a little bias with that. He just seemed one of the truly egregious mistakes...

He led all qualified second baseman in a couple of the metrics covering range, etc. and was second in a couple others. How that translates into a 3 blows my mind. Even if you give more weight to inside edge ratings, it should only move him to a 2 when all the rest of the metrics scream a 1.

I would love to hear Strat's explanation for his "3" at 2B. I agree, it's a mind-blower. I thought Jankowski with a "2" was bad. And Hernandez played a full season (596 combined AB's and BB's)) at 2B. That's no small sample size. Weird.

For those who saw more of him than I did was he that bad a fielder or is that the standard bad rating often given to rookies with limited playing time sample?

I heard that he had arm issues from shortstop (as a Padres farmhand) and was likely to be moved to 2B later on. The fact that Turner burned through the minor leagues so fast with his superlative hitting kind of white-washed any defensive lapses. His hitting was awesome pretty much from the start as a Padres minor leaguer. Fans weren't too concerned with his fielding. We were too busy drooling over his hitting prowess! Personally I think Turner will work on his fielding more than usual next year and we'll see.

And, I know Preller really didn't care for Turner's infield defensive skills. Btw, SOMworld has an enormous error projection number for Turner in addition to his "4" range at shortstop next year. :D

All that said, if you ask me, I'd MUCH rather still have Turner and Joe Ross than Wil Myers. Any day.

Fair points, but no way is he a 4 at 2b or SS. Eyeball test showed him making plays left and right (though stats seem to argue for a 3). His routes in CF were off, but the speed allowed him to make mistakes. A 3 is probably right.

I have to wonder if the folks at Strat in charge of assigning defensive values to hitters could use some outside perspective. Because Keeper league players really count on them having accurate perspective. But...

Why does David Wright have a number in his box? He only played for the Mets I believe. Did I miss a trade? Strat trades don't count!

Trea Turner is not a CFer, he was awful in CF, he should be a 4. Maybe he will improve?

You have to remember they run thousands of simulations and if the Phillies are winning too many games they will find a player to downgrade to make the AS PLAYED REPLAYS more realistic in wins in losses....

So Hernandez of the Phillies probably does deserve a 2 but since his team was so bad he wound up with a 3. It kind of sucks.

And it works the other way with Trea Turner and Washington. Washington won despite Turner's awful defense in CF but since Washington was so good as a team they decided to give him a 3 in CF.

Everything has to line up so teams as a whole can have similar performances in the AS PLAYED REPLAYS.

They'll be released with the ratings book which came out 1/15 last year. 1/13 two years ago.
