365 question about defensive subs ...

PostFri Jun 25, 2021 8:30 pm

I am about to begin a 365 season with the 2021 format. I am new to this format and need a question answered about defensive substitutions. I went to 'Team Strategy" I scrolled down and put in my defensive subs. All good........but when I went into the "Hitter Preferences" there was a boxed row that read "Rem 4 def sub with lead." When checking the boxes does that mean I am checking off the boxes for those players I want to be substituded......or am i checking the subs boxes I want to come into the game when I have the lead ? Rookie here, but thanks all. Seems like both "team strategy and "rem 4 def subs with lead" are similar.

You're checking the boxes for the Players you want removed from the game. And yes, those two you mention are very similar. Just a little background, many of the Boxes in Team Strategy almost (not entirely) became useless after the introduction of Individual Player boxes known as Hitter Preferences. For example, you can theoretically check "Aggressive" Bunting, but check all the boxes for each player to 'Not Bunt.' H.P. will over-ride the Strategy setting, and your players won't bunt.

Now, in case you're not familiar with a double-switch. The A1 can do a double-switch "if" your Defensive Replacements in Strategy are set properly. The two players involved in the D.S. must be on the 1-2 line or 3-4 line, not 2-3 line for instance. The Defensive Player that didn't start and is entering the game must be listed ahead of the Player in the game.

I know this can be confusing for newbies, but you will get the hang of it after some games under your belt.

Hey Jeep,

Great information and tips. I have " two , 4's, starting in the outfield, a "4" shortstop"...and a "4" catcher. I dont like using "4's but its slim pickins for the league I am about to start tomorrow. I have all 4 players being subbed with being "1 or 2's late in the game for defense. Thanks again.

Bruce,

Welcome. A little tip about defensive subs. If you check the box "Rem 4 def sub" in the hitters preference, HAL sticks to that pretty strictly. As a result, HAL will often pull that fielder even if no rated players at that position are available. That means that if your defensive sub SS got used earlier in the game you may end up with an OF replacinig that 4 SS where he would be rated a 5ereallybignumber. It can also lead HAL to go into meltdown and start moving players all over the field.

I always use the defensive subs on the team strategy, and never check the rem 4 def sub box for that reason.

Chris, I have had that situation as well, but at Catcher, which is bad too. My good fielding backup catcher got used earlier, so HAL took my 3 fielding catcher out of the game because I had him checked "remove" and put in a fielder to replace him -- promptly resulting in 3 Passed balls, and 6 SB in the 9th inning of a blown game. Never again!

ugh. That sounds brutal.

I continue to believe that HAL drinks during games. Thats the only explanation for some of the moves he makes.
