Range Rating Fails & Good Calls

PostSat Mar 29, 2025 9:47 pm

What defensive range ratings are you happy with? Or upset with? Were there any changes that surprised you?

I have to say, I find it hard to believe Carlos Correa's range of 1 at SS is valid. Especially with Trea Turner being a 3. But maybe I am wrong??

Maybe Correa's positioning and his arm allow him to have the best range possible. I don't see Trea Turner every day, and I know he was a 3/4 last year (depending on the set). I thought he should be a 2, but maybe I am wrong.

Defense ratings are subjective, aren't they? In 2022, Ketel Marte was a 4 at 2B. Now he is a 1. Maybe he worked at his fielding skills. Maybe the metrics were changed that measured his D. Hard to say. Perhaps someone with an understanding of sabermetrics can compare Marte's defensive stats to SOM's defensive ratings over those years.

I don't know if it's still the case, but historically SOM took into account reports from scouts that saw players play when they assigned their defensive ratings.

I am aware that they have used real scouts in the past and I admire that. But I have also noticed if a star has a great year at the plate, they often get a huge bump in range rating, which is weird.

There's just no way I can believe Carlos Correa has as good of range as anyone at SS.

Addressing Trea Turner's range rating as a Phils' watcher..Turner has a vacuum cleaner to his left in Bryson Stott and a tall
long-armed 3B to his right in Alec Bohm who loves to cut in front of him. He doesn't have the space or need to be a 1 or even a 2. He plays deep to keep balls in the infield and be able to snag the short flyballs, which he does. My problem with him is the nonchalance that leads to too many errors on the easy plays.

Yeah, good point, and believe it or not they do those range ratings so the team defense will reflect real life. So, there may be a lot to what you are saying.
