TAKE TWO: 2014 set sleepers

PostThu Mar 26, 2015 8:59 pm

w/ apol's to kted -- borrowed his thread and started anew; let's stay on topic, people! Or whatever. I mean, what, am I your boss?

OK, here we go

Brian Duensing as LH specialist

0.53m, only 20.6 OB chances vs lefties -- admittedly, 8.75 doubles chances -- and no BPHR

bonus: minus 4 hold, 2e0 fielder

BARGAIN!

Well, I weighed in on the last thread with a quintet of guys I thought looked like bargains/sleepers, and here's how it's turned out, after a small sample of 39 games to date, home in Great American but on the road 27 games so far. Numbers are BA/OBA/SLG:

 Chone Figgins, platoon DH, maybe even 3B, vs. RH in pitchers' parks -- can hit leadoff or even better in the #2 hole cuz no gb(a). Only $1.75.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 28 PA: .091/.286/.091

 James Shields S7*/1L/3.21/1.18 for just under $2mm seems like the steal of the year to anchor the back of a rotation.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 4-4 / 5.17 /1.41

:D Sean Rodriguez is unique good glove @2B w/ max RH BPHR bat vs RH pitching, for a $2.38.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 53 PA 4HR / .135/.196 /.365

:) Danny Espinoza excellent OBA leadoff platoon at SS or 2B vs. LH pitching, 2e18 and 2e8, for $1.68
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 48PA .178/ .289/ .311

:? John Mayberry Jr. Max BPHR vs. LH pitching w/ respectable glove at 1B and corner OF for $1.42
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 38PA .091/ .220 /.273

In other words: Every so-called bargain that I called has been a FLOP. Early samples, for sure, but the fact all five are failures is humbling. This d@mn game.

@TomSiebert, I thought the same thing with James Shields. In 15 starts and 95 IP (little larger sample size) he's 4-4 with a 4.93 ERA and 1.39 WHIP

Shields has been a disaster for me at Tropicana 1-7 8.12 and 10 homers in 50 innings and with another Tropicana and PNC and Minute Maid in the division I thought he would do at least a little better!

in my league he's 5-9 with a 4.85 at chase field.

my best semi sleeper (5 mil) is yan gomes. leads the league in rbi's and hr's playing at yankee stadium.

I think in the long run it may be Chistian Vazquez that becomes the most valuable low priced sleeper player---great catchers arm, -4, ----bad T rating, but who's going to attempt steals off him??, and he's hitting .294 in one league--30 games in (not my player).

Another may be Tori Hunter as a DH.

I think Hechavarria a low priced deal or a Romine/Segura platoon, but they are not really sleepers in my mind--they are just to obvious to be sleepers

That's sorta the numbers what I was hoping for from S-Rod....and actually he'd hit 40 HR in 530 AB paced out on my team.

You play him @2B ? He only starts vs. reverse RH for me at home and a couple road stadiums, and then at 3B, though I originally drafted him for 2B until I found Neil Walker unexpectedly available later.

Rodriguez and Shields are probably the two who have a least a LITTLE upside of my so-called sleepers, but Espinoza/Mayberry/Figgins all <.600 OPS and Figgins is abysmal. actually below .400 OPS.
