New To Strat

PostMon Sep 26, 2016 6:05 pm

I am totally new to Strat. I just picked up the HOF board game and became hooked.
I have played fantasy baseball before was always a sucker for statistics.

So now I am asking for feedback from other folks on where to start?

Should I give 365 a chance? I am still waiting for my trial league to fill up.
Should I give the PC version a shot? My understanding is the PC you can either sim or manage a season or play head to head with others.

Simply put I am asking where to go from here within the world of strat.
Feedback is appreciated.

I would start with the cdrom. What I always did was use the autodraft feature and generate managers to draft against Hal. I would autoplay all teams except mine. And on mine I would autoplay the games through the 7th inning and then manage from there myself.

One reason for starting with the cdrom is it will help you understand the many super advanced features which are also in play here. Another reason is you can play as many seasons/leagues as you want. The online game can be both addicting and expensive as there is a charge per team credit purchased/played.

And while playing around with that you can read some of the strategy threads on these forums and follow some of the discussions.

Then regardless of whether your free trial league has filled or how that goes jump in with a 5 pack. Use one of those on a 2015 current team. Use one on an ATG team. Use one to play one of the mystery games. Use one for one of the various single season historical seasons. That will give you a good feel for what each is like and whether you are going to have a preference for one over another. Proceed accordingly.

Thank you for your response.

I still have a few questions.

If I get the 2016 PC game what does it mean when it says "plus player cards". I know these are not physical cards. So what are they? Should I bother getting it or stick with the simple package first.
Also I do see you can pay to unlock some of the historical teams as well.
Can you do a fantasy draft of sorts or are you simply stuck with the 2015 rosters to play with? Would it be possible for me to sim a few games and play others? Do I need to manage just one team or can I hop around?
As for the PC version, after I purchase it going forward all I need to do is purchase additional rosters? Can you also get online pickup games against other managers?

As for the 365 game I also have a few questions as well. Why should I get 5 teams? Can't I simply get one or two? Is the reason you mentioned five teams is that you can be in five different leagues based on the roster type? What does a mystery league mean anyway? I did read that a season lasts 8 weeks. After the 8 week season is over I need to purchase another team to join another league or can I simply register for another league with one of my team slots? I assume that when you say 5 teams it's actually five team slots. Why did you mention that 365 can get rather expensive.
Finally if I am not mistaken in 365 you set your team strategy and tendencies and all games are simmed each night. There is no actual real time managing that takes place.

I do appreciate the response and look forward to hearing more.

"Plus cards" means you actually get physical cards I believe. You can play as a board game or on the computer. Strat was played as a board game long before people had PCs. Every player has a physical card. I recommend it. I love the cards. I believe it is the better way to play, however, not as convenient.

You purchase a particular set in the CD ROM / Card universe. It is generally a particular year (every player in that year) or a compilation set (Only Hall of famers for example).

Just like there are a ton of CD ROM sets you can buy, 365 has a ton of options for types of leagues you can get into. Variables include the card set (year, compilation, etc) or variables like what the salary cap is, whether a DH is used....... This makes every league you can join different if you mix up the variables. Folks tend to find one or two of the combinations to be the most enjoyable or more/less challenging. It is like pancakes...... they all are good, but maybe you really like Blueberries in yours. Don't know til you try.

It can get expensive. I run one league at a time for 8 weeks. for a $20 team, it is $2.50 a week. Plus, if you do well, you can win free teams...... and there is at least one sale a year on teams that I have seen. I get more than my monies worth. Some folks will have 4-5 or more leagues going at a time though. That is commitment.

Having the CD Rom version will help you learn the game......... Lots of lessons need to be learned before you are competitive. And not having the option of running a bunch of seasons means you start the race late and are going to lose more than average which can be devastating and cause you to quit. Questions like "how important is fielding skill at LF or 2B". "What does gbA mean and how does it impact a players worth"? "How important is a pitchers hold rating"? "How do ballpark effect impact my choice of players". Playing the CD-Rom game will give you a jump into the game and answer questions or at least give you questions to ask.

Have fun

Joe Morgan probably covered everything. But just in case.....

The cdrom game can be purchased all by itself and you get to play but never see the cards which makes it fairly generic like any other computerized baseball sim game. You can purchase with card images where you can also in additon to all the play features lets you see a "picture" of the card image. For me that is necessary to truly make it strat. Then the ultimate you can also purchase the actual physical cards that you can sort through without a computer and play with actual dice if you desire to go old school.

Technically all strat products are on the cdrom. But what you can see is based on what license keys you purchase and enter to unlock that feature or player set. Each year in theory you will only need to purchase the current cdrom version to go with the newly added 20xx set. Your historical set licenses should carry forward so you keep access to all the past seasons/sets you have purchased.

Why get 5 teams? Because you get a discount. And your experience with any single season could vary considerably. You may have a bad experience with just one team and quit when with a little more exposure would find a great hobby. Just my opinion that just one team is insufficient to accurately judge how much your might enjoy the hobby. Also, since there are multiple types of online strat and each has it's own pros and cons you might like one while not liking another. For example I would never waste time with a mystery card game or the baseball daily game. But there are those who love them. How do you know which one you might fall in? In my opinion best way is to play one of each. So if you play a 20xx game, an ATG game, a mystery set, a baseball daily you have purchased 4 credits. At single credit purchase you have already basically paid what you would for a 5 pack. So why not buy the 5 pack and have that final 5th basicallly free credit?

What does a mystery league mean anyway?

In mystery sets you basically start with a decade. Each player in the set has 5 seasons from that decade. You draft the player but do not know which year you will get. Could be his monster 98 season or it could be his disastrous 95 season. Thus the mystery monicker. He is not in any mystery sets but the Ichiro card comes to mind. One season is balanced toward righty pitchers and another is stonger against lefties. Can you figure out which one you have and manage accordingly. Or maybe you draft Brady Anderson. Did you get his 50 HR season that will crush pitchers? Or any of his other seasons where he will kill your team? Some people love the challenge of figuring that stuff out. Some do not. I think as someone new to the game only way to decide which you are may be to give it a try for a season.

Why did you mention that 365 can get rather expensive.

Because if you get hooked and do not have self control you can end up starting a new team every week and having a $100 a month budget for strat. Or really hooked and be launching a new team every day and having a $100 a week budget. For some of us that is expensive. Think about it you could be looking at playing strat or buying a new car. There was a time I always had 8 teams going at any given time. And there are some who always have 20, 30, or more teams going. If you are not winning a lot of finals so you are doing that on free credits then better have a good job and an understanding spouse.

And last there is no actual real time managing in the online game. You are more of a general manager than a field manager. You construct the team and give Hal the manager your desires but what actually happens may not follow your script. For some the frustration of that ruins the fun. For others who can accept that they have a ton of fun.

Thank you all for the feedback.

Can you play an online league with the cdrom version?

In 365 let's say a season is over. Can I reuse that team slot for a new league or do I need to keep in purchasing teams?
Mystery does sound interesting.

Perhpas I should try the cdrom with visual cards. I am not sure if getting physical cards are worth to get just yet.
Curious to hear back from you folks.

Much appreciated.

Also can I play online with the cdrom version with other managers?
Can you play in an online league as well?
If you can connect then how do you connect your sessions?

As for rosters I don't need to buy the game again but just the roster.

a "slot" is only good for the 8 weeks that that season is in play. Once over, you need to buy a new team to play a second 8 week season. However, if you win the league, you win a credit or two to play again for free.

you don't "need" to buy the physical cards. However, I would. It makes a good thing great........

I would buy the card images. But unless you plan to play with dice would not buy the cards.

Yes, with the cdrom I believe you can play with other managers but you have to find them. Probably a few ways to do that. I think there are some separate forums ran by someone else but do not have details.

For me that is biggest advantage of the 365 game, not need to find others to play with.

If you can connect then how do you connect your sessions?

How to should be in the help on the cdrom. Probably will be easier to figure out how than finding enough to form a league. I never used that feature when I was a cdrom customer. And refuse to purchase current cdrom because of the practice strat used to invalidate my legitmate prior purchases and prevent me from using what I had paid for. If they had done me right there I would have likely bought every single season and game they had by now.

As for rosters I don't need to buy the game again but just the roster

Actually this is a yes and no. If you mean historical teams then you can just buy the teams and you will get the unlock code. If you mean say the 2016 season when it arrives next year you will need to buy the 2016 roster and an upgrade to your cdrom. Your existing one obviously would not have the 2016 season and they will not ship a new cdrom unless you purchase the update. So you will have an annual upgrade fee in addition to purchasing the current season roster.
