I figured we're deep enough into this draft that I should understand the rules somewhat.

This statement is provided within the rules:
A team can have no more than 25 keepers and can go no lower than three under each season's keeper number. For example, in 2007 you can have no less than 19 keepers.

My question:
Does this mean that we can draft our 22 players, going over the salary cap of $80M, and stash three of the drafted players away for the 2007 season to get under the cap, but still retain the rights?

Thanks.

Wow!

I allowed the 25 keepers so that teams could make unbalanced multiple-player trades. You can only go under the 22 keepers if you make such a trade. If you end a season with less than the number of keepers for the next season you cannot cut anyone.

For example, If you make a deal with Rob that sends four of your keepers to his team for two of his you now have 20 keepers. For season two we all will have 21 keepers, allowing us to cut one. You, however, already have just 20, so you have to keep them.

No stashing players, Steinbrenner!

I'm sure there are other rule clarifications and loopholes we might discover along the way. I'll do my best to straighten them out while making sure my team always comes out on top.

Thanks. Like I said we're starting to get into this pretty deep, so I better read the rules again!
Whatever your answer to that was going to be, it wouldn;'t have affected my first 5 picks, but would likely have impacted my upcoming picks.

It probably goes without saying, but...

One of the "3D chess" thoughts I've been having about how to make my draft picks is...that I think we need to try to make our picks fit into the salary cap more or less FOR EACH SEASON - 2007-2012!!!!

Am I right?

If so, this means that we have to try to have our high value picks be somewhat complementary to each other in terms of "peaks" in their salaries year by year.

What happens if we're accidentally over $80 million for one of the card years? What can we do about that? A few posts ago it was said that we can't "hide" our keepers, but what if we go over $80 million in a particular card year - especially the first few seasons when we have the highest keeper requirements? (I guess in the later years we can manage being over by "dropping" a high salary keeper, but then is he gone forever after that season?).

If my interpretation is right, then we really have to watch our salary cap management, especially for the first few seasons. No point drafting Lincecum if I have to drop him after 2011 - wait, that's a bad example - hmmm.... ;)
