What does unbalanced schedules have to do with good old fashioned HEAD TO HEAD?

That should be the #1 thing.

If I beat you 8 out of 12 times and then beat another manager 7 out of 12 times, I have a better H2H record.

because say you have 12 vs both and one has 9 and 12. Say you got 6-6 7-5 and he goes 6-6 and 5-4. Too hard to make a call.

I understand your frustration... Like I said the way it is now isn't right.

On the other hand I just think record vs other divisions is a better mark. Which you would have also won FWIW.

Here's another example of a 3-way tie (at 91 games):

Team 1 (mine) 91 wins, 52-38 out.div 4-5 v. Team 2, 10-2 v. Team 3

Team 2 50-40 out.div 5-4 v. Team 1, 7-5 v. Team 3

Team 3 46-44 out.div 2-10 v. Team 1, 5-7 v. Team 2

So Team 3 gets top seed, Team 2 2nd and Team 1 3rd. Team 3's division was the weakest of the three (-12 wins), Team 2's division (-6 wins), Team 1's division (+18 wins).

I can't see any way that record within division is the best tie-breaker. I would prefer (1) strongest division, (2) record vs. tied teams, (3) record out.div
