As I noted earlier, i don't see San Diego winning it with Shields these next two years, but it has nothing to do with the contract. KC didn't sign Shields to a long-term contract; they traded Myers And Odorizzi for his back years of a low-cost contract. So, you can't really compare the two contract situations.
Another interesting wrinkle is that Shields can opt out after 2016, so SD's window may be shorter than they hoped, Upton or no.
