Reading now that Tanaka will be posted Tuesday. Just a question now who will be the teams going after him and who will be the teams who have no chance.
If I were a team I would still post the $20 mil max whether I had interest or not. Get as many teams in that pot looking interested as possible to drive up the price for whomever gets him.
When considering how many teams will go all in don't get short sighted. It is not just the super rich that have a shot. Many teams are spending this year who do not typically spend. Some have been declared out based on how much they have already spent.
Rangers are just such a team. But I think it would make a lot of sense for the Rangers to go all in and sign him if possible.
Then once you get far enough in spring training to be confident of just what you have other pitchers could be moved to bring the overall team budget structure down. For example sign Tanaka and then shop one or more of their young starters and prospects. Maybe Miami would reconsider Stanton if they were getting a package of major league ready starters. Rangers have depth there. Holland, Harrison, Martin Perez, Tepesch, Feliz, Ogando, Offer Rios, 2 One or two of these plus another prospect from the system and Miami just might bite. By making Holland or Harrison part of the package would stabilize the budget. Or they could just bite the bullet and increase the budget. They have the money and are nowhere close to the luxury tax threshold yet. I am not expecting Rangers to get Tanaka because I think Dodgers have an i don't care approach to spending right now. But I have been hearing for some time the Rangers have scouted and invested as much manpower and resources in to Tanaka as they did Yu. So I am certain they will at least make their best effort.
