Strat-O-Matic Baseball 365

This was posted in the ATG forum. I do not see a HOF post on the 200x forum. While there is some overlap of players between the two games I have found there is generally a different subset of people playing the 2 games. I am thinking older people may tend to play the ATG game more while younger may prefer the 200x game. Regardless I am curious if the people in this forum would vote differently than those in the ATG forum. Here is exactly what the post was for the ATG forum that kicked off the discussion. OK, an unscientific poll - who would you vote for in this year's historic HOF ballot?

You can vote for as few as none, and as many as ten. 75% of total votes necessary for enshrinement. You cannot vote for anyone not listed on the ballot, and voters are asked to consider the following "necessary criteria" to earn a spot in Cooperstown:

"They shall be chosen on the basis of playing ability, sportsmanship, character, their contribution to the teams on which they played and to baseball in general."

I can't vote for the juicers. I also prefer playing current seasons (or 1969 if it was available). The ATG and mystery card sets do not appeal to me. Too gimmicky.

Bonds, Clemens, Biggio, Trammel, Schilling.

Bonds and Clemens were great enuf both before and after they juiced to make the Hall. They just did it better than everyone else. It was the juice era. The only way to keep up with the others who did it was to do it also. I don't condone the behavior and I respect the players more who didn't. But these were the best of the best either way.

If steroids were a way to extend one's career after injuries, I would do them too. Case in point - Andy Pettitte.

But I will admit, I preferred the style of play before the juice era. All the power numbers did not make the great game of baseball better IMO. And the games took so much longer to finish. I have always preferred the NL style of play - Even in the AL with mgrs like Whitey Herzog(Royals) and Sparky Anderson(Detroit) coming to mind.

Jack Morris has better numbers that some elected before him AND the remaining characteristics are a no brainer!

Lee Smith could have easily been inducted on the 1st or 2nd ballots he was eligible for! He retired with the most saves in MLB history...and most were of at least 4 outs or more!! The BBWWA disrespect him on the sole fact that he was never on a WS team! That's horrible! I'm sure Trevor Hoffman and Mariano Rivera will make it, deservedly so, however, Mr. Smith needs to be inducted!!

No one else, IMO, deserves the vote...not this year. Biggio will make it and so will Bagwell, however, neither are 1st ballot inductees. As far as next year...if Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas don't get in on the 1st ballot, something's wrong and the voting process needs to be seriously changed. Maddux should be the 1st player in history to be UNANIMOUS and they should take away the vote of ANY writer who doesn't vote for him!

I would vote a couple of the other 1st year guys in but in later years I hold putting guys in on the first year on the ballot very high so you have to have extra ordinary numbers to get on your first year

Morris has been better than very few of the HOF Inductees. Comparing him to some other bad inductees is not the best way of determining whether he is deserving.

I really don't like the saves stat. I don't feel that Smith was ever really considered one of the best pitchers in the MLB, even during his ASG run. Very few relief pitchers are in, only a select few should make it, not a closer with a 3+ ERA and a 1.25+ career WHIP.

What do you mean by "First Ballot Inductees"? Is there a specific rulebook to what a first ballot player should look like? Biggio, Piazza and Bagwell are easy HOF's, just get them in so they don't further muddle the coming classes.

Just curious, why is Mike Piazza not mentioned more often? I thought he was a sure 1st ballot HOFer.

There is no specific rule for First Ballot HOFers but it has been common practice with the voters to only induct players with surefire numbers on there first time on the ballot players that were seen to have been the dominate players of the era would be the only ones to be voted in on the initial ballot
