for no reason at all, HAL substituted McDonald for Pennington

Penn was NOT pinch-hit for by Robinson (it was CF Gwynn)

Penn was NOT injured

Penn NOT marked remove for other fielder or avoid left (and he was due up SIXTH in the bottom of the 9th inning in a tie game)

McDonald NOT listed (or anyone else) as sub at SS

NO EXCUSE for this (I'm waiting, kneejerk apologists ....)
