."upgraded" defensive substitutions?

PostTue Jul 09, 2013 12:13 pm

OK, here's one that had me scratching my head last night. Bottom of 8, I'm down 3-2. Number 9 hitter (my starting 3b) leading off the inning, so HAL pinch hits a better hitter, Blake Dewitt who also plays 3b. He makes an out, but I do tie the game. So, at the start of the next half inning:

TOP OF INNING 9
SUBSTITUTION at C: Pablo Sandoval
SUBSTITUTION at 1B: Billy Butler
SUBSTITUTION at 3B: Blake Dewitt

So Blake Dewitt (3e16) replaces Juan Uribe (2e22) OK that was the pinch hitter
Sandoval playing 1st base (where he's a 3e11) goes to catch (4(0)e8) replacing Ross (3(-1)e7)
and Butler (5e11) comes into the game at 1B

I _think_ it's the old "player out of position" switch-a-roo where HAL sees Sandoval playing at his non-primary position (1b) and moves him to his actual primary position is 3b, but then tries to optimize because he's a bad defender there (4e37) Obviously a complicated scenario here, but why the needless substitution where I ended up worse at three positions instead of one? DH league so it wasn't a double switch or anything complicated like that. Anyone have a better reason?

probably just to keep Dewitt in. This is the '08 set and Sandoval does have C as a regular position. So, HAL moved him to C. So, essentially you've got Butler in for Ross. That's the question. was Butler at DH or did he just enter the game? if he was at DH, who became the new DH?

Butler entered the game in the defensive switches. The DH was Dobbs who stayed at DH the whole game.

The obvious move was put Dewitt at 3b and change nothing else. There was no (logical) reason to move Sandoval to C or to bring in Butler.
