Starting Pitcher Injuries Question

PostFri Aug 16, 2013 12:51 am

I just had a starter get hurt for 15 games in a 5 man rotation--I see that Affeldt is going to be my spot Starter in my Schedule.

Will hal shut him down a game before the start so he doesn't start the game tired?

Just a related question--I seldom see starters get hurt for more than 3 games---I wondered If * starters are limited to the 3 game injury like some players are.

I had Deshaies go down for 10 games in a '86 league, and Chuck Finley (R3) was assigned the starter. He ended up pitching in the previous 3 games (5.2 innings total), then pitched 6 innings for his start (F9 until he gave up a HR leading off the 7th). So he is either unfatigueable (?) or HAL reset him for the start. :o

"Will hal shut him down a game before the start so he doesn't start the game tired?"

I've had a starter go down a few times in the last few years. I generally take the initiative and remove the relief pitcher from the pitching roles. In my experience, when I remove the RP from the pitching roles, HAL generally doesn't use him as an RP in the immediately preceding games.

Another question is begged - "How would I know which RP HAL intends to start?" - Of course, if the injured SPs spot is in the next 3 games, it will show up on the front office page. I don't know this for sure, but I wonder if it might also show up on the "team/schedule" page, where it lists the upcoming starters (according to HAL anyway).

"Just a related question--I seldom see starters get hurt for more than 3 games---I wondered If * starters are limited to the 3 game injury like some players are."

I don't think anyone has seen this expressed as a "rule", but in the experience of various online strat gamers, I don't think we have ever seen a SP* pitcher get injured for more than 3 games. So, the consensus answer on this question is that it appears that SP* injuries are limited to 3 games. This appears to be another benefit of having a SP* pitcher.

One more thing - if a non-SP starter goes down to injury and misses more than one start, HAL will generally use the same RP to replace the SP in each of the required starts. HAL generally uses an RP that has a higher endurance rating, and generally avoids using a closer RP. However, other people might have found exceptions to these comments, maybe. When this has happened to me, I generally change my pitcher preferences to get the other starting pitchers to go longer/deeper into games, in order to avoid a situation where the bullpen is super fatigued, running on F0 for innings at a time.

This appears to show that HAL will allow the RP to have his endurance refreshed for the start. I haven't had this come up in my injuries to SPs.

The rules no longer show this, but this is how it used to be, and I assume it's still correct:

<200 IP = 15-game injury max
200-299 IP = 3-game injury max
300+ IP = rest of game only max

thanks coyote--that will help in the future--no difference in the 200 and 300 inning starters really in a four man rotation, unless it's one who can pitch in relief like Phil Niekro used too.

I haven't played ATG teams online yet, but the rules must be different if a relief pitcher is going 3 games in a row.

The first years I played SoM were in the 60's and pitchers like Wilhelm were very valuable then as they had a lot of innings, long endurance, and fantastic cards every year.

Also I remember Marshall going 208 innings or something like that in 73 I believe, after the L/R cards and advanced rules became available, specifically the point of weakness bullets on the cards, and Marshall had a "can pitch when tired rating" which meant he never came into a game tired.

Edit:--I looked it up--it was 1974 for Mike Marshall--106 games all in relief
