Juan Pierre

PostMon Oct 21, 2013 2:07 pm

I find that I end up going for Juan Pierre in almost any team I draft, in both hitter and pitcher parks. I love the elite OBP vs righties, and I usually grab Erik Komatsu to platoon with him. I know the defense is lousy, but for 2.81m I get 44+ on base chances against everyone, and I get a leadoff hitter for both ways. For Pierre, I've gotten .286/.321, .341/.385, and .346/.375 seasons out of him, all with 40+ SBs playing exclusively vs righties. Does anyone else agree that this is one of the best values in the card set? Because I usually list Pierre about 9 to 12 on my draft card, and I get him 80% of the time.

through 105 games
Pierre 226 ABs 28 sb .319 .366 .394
Viciedo 215 ABs 8 hr .307 .350 .465

lot of leftys in this league. not bad for 3.76 million

For just a bit more I prefer Eric Young, although you still need a compentnet back up as a fielding replacement and injury sub, but he's good OBP and speed both ways...

How many times was he caught? I'm just curious how well I stack up; my .341 hitting Pierre stole 77 also, but was caught 26.

Caught 17. Sure a lot of variation depending on catchers and pitchers.

What settings did you have him and your team on? (If you don't mind sharing)

He was on steal more often. I think I switched the team stealing aggressiveness a lot. So maybe 50-50 normal and aggressive. I rarely use very aggressive.

I like Juan Pierre. He has a nice card for the price vs rhp's, 600 AB's and of course, the speed. I think you might be over valuing him a bit. I have him on a speed team and the SB's are nice. I like SB's as much or more than the next guy, but they are at least somewhat of an empty statistic. I have Reyes, Pierre and Revere on my team that is 19-14. In 33 games they have stolen 59 bases and been caught only 4 times, which is pretty good by and standard. Between the three of them they have only scored 32 runs in those 33 games. The SB's look nice but there is not any kind of direct correlation between SB's and runs scored even when you are very good at it. Regarding his OBP, he does not have "elite" obp. Again, for the price, he has a nice or even very nice card vs rhp's and I totally understand drafting him. However, if you end up using him in a hitting park I think you messed up your team somewhere else if he is on your team. I just don't see him as being the best option ever in a hitting park except in very rare, almost nonexistent circumstances. To me, he is not a bad guy to have on a team(except in a hitting park), but some of his stats will always be a little more impressive than there actual worth towards winning. Again, given his low price he is probably a bargain by any definition of the word and even if he isn't great, he capably and cheaply fills a role that allows monies to be spent elsewhere. I don't think he qualifies as one of the best values in the card set because his stats are somewhat "empty", which is why his price is so cheap.

I agree to a large extent with the analysis of stolen bases. On a hitters park team, SBs don't matter too much because you score your runs on obp and home runs to drive them in. But on base wise, Pierre is 22nd best in the whole set vs. RHPs. I think that qualifies as elite, but at that point it's a matter of definitions. So I use him in some hitters parks purely as my leadoff hitter, because he comes cheap and I can get obp out of him while the guys behind him drive him in. For 2.31 million, only Lance Berkman has better righty OBP, and he's only playable as a part time DH. So combining him with a casper wells type guy, and adding Rickie Weeks as a DH vs lefties, for 4-5 million I get a leadoff hitter for both sides, and a lefty-killer. Also, I'm curious how you got such amazing SB numbers with Pierre and Revere. I can never get close to that success rate!
