Not guaranteed at all. Fernandez made 8 starts this year and pitched 51.2 innnings, which puts him in a bit of the undecided zone. SOM placed Ted Lilly in the unleashed '12 set with 8 games and 8 starts, but they included Nathan Eovaldi--with 10 gms, 6 starts, and 34.2 ip--in the regular '11 set. So, he could arguably be placed in either next year.

If this years' assignments shows a developing tendency in these assignments, then Fernandez still falls between those SP's placed in unleashed--Roark (14/5/53.2) and Cumpton (6/5/30.2)--and those who probably just made the cut: Gray (12/10/64) and Cosart (10/10/60)

Considering all this, and the fact that Fernandez' performance level was not a radical deviation from last year*, I give 3/2 odds for Fernandez' inclusion in the regular list.


*Although his ERA was higher and his WHIP was almost exactly the same, his BB/9IP and K/9IP did decidedly improve this year, and that may be the deciding factor if SOM makes him unleashed.

His rookie year demonstrates he was no fluke. However I was thiinkng they would not include him due to only pitching the
first two months

Again, SOM absolutely refuses to give any sort of guidelines for the unleashed, instead of including them all at the proper pricing, they have to continue the charade of having a separate set. If there isn't enough pitching to make unleashed worth it, I could see them dropping him down, otherwise he would be in the regular set.

SOM should establish guidelines for the unleashed set: at least a clear set of principles that would shape their decisions, if not a set of rigid rules.

However, maintaining an unleashed set, instead of including "all at the proper pricing," is still a good idea and not a "charade." Many owners, including myself, still appreciate maintaining a substantial semblance of accurate simulation of player performance. Those who are fine seeing Tommy Medica hitting 40 hrs will always have the unleashed set.

Also, If we open the door to carding everybody "at the proper pricing"--as many have argued for--we would have had Quintin Berry dominating this year's league with his .667/1.000/1.667 line, 1 hr, and 3 sbs in 8 ABs in 2013. Obviously, a floor for inclusion could prevent this. However, those arguing against the unleashed set have either argued against establishing any such floor or failed to agree on what that floor should be.

sorry, my point was this.

I believe he will be in the regular set, barring there not being enough talent on the Unleashed set that the drop him down. The fact that they have to have enough talent to warrant an unleashed set, makes all these borderline cases unknown until the set comes out. It shouldn't be this way.... Assuming there are enough pitchers in the 4+ mil range (typically 3-4) for the unleashed set without him, he should be in the regular set based off track record.

All I know is I was crushed when Fernandez went down. Guess who had him on their fantasy team.

Sad thing was that forever after when I sorted the available free agents he continued to be ranked as the top ranked pitcher. Eventually his counting stats fell far enough off that he dropped down. But he is still ranked 7th among available pitchers in one of my leagues that has large and deep rosters. A tribute to just how good he was before bowing out.

Tell me about it. I have both he and Harvey on one of my keeper teams and through the middle of the year last year I thought I was all set for my top two starters. Now I'm scambling to fill out a staff for next year. These days it seems it's not a question of if a top flight pitcher is going to need TJ surgery, more a question of when.
