Who would you fire...

...if you could fire one manager in MLB today. I'd axe Lloyd McClendon. He was dealt a strong hand talent wise and yet the Ms have a poor record. Nothing in his prior history bodes well for a turnaround either. John Farrell has been awful too; 2013 is looking like such a fluke, as they've been lousy for 3 out of 4 years. Can't shake the idea that Matt Williams is getting less out of the Nats than he should be.

But McClendon it is for me.

You?

I agree about McClendon. Heck, I wanted him gone last year. He overworked the bullpen and that's going to catch up to a lot of those relievers in the 2nd half this season. He has a good repoir with his players, but other than that he's clueless.

I'd fire Ben Cherington...I think Farrell's being hampered with questionable front office decisions - a pitching staff with no 1's or 2's...a logjam of average talent in the OF, with HanRam's defense making ManRam look like a gold glover...and I was never a fan of the Sandoval signing either. I feel like there is no overall strategy to the team's construction. That being said Farrell does make some questionable moves on occasion, but still, the overall team makeup is ugly.

Yeah, the Sox' title in 2013 looks incredibly fluky. At least as fluky as titles can be. They've been awful the 3 years surrounding that.

mattingly is going to be on the hotseat soon if the dodgers don't start scoring. I don't know how many more times I can hear "these things go in cycles. the guys are putting in the work. it's going to turn around" before I snap. they've got to bring the kid shortstop up in place of rollins. when they made that move with puig a couple years ago it reinvigorated them and they won soming like 40/50 games.

Mattingly has a lot of rope. Seager will probably not be seen before September.

I agree Seager will not be seen until September. That is probably not Mattingly's call. The front office is paying Rollins and eating that money by calling up Seager would be unexpected and would require them to admit to a mistake. Would be easier to blame Mattingly and the hitting coach.

I'm not sure it was a mistake. Rollins was only supposed to be a 1 year rental until Seager was ready anyway, and he has stabilized the infield defensively.

A main reason why they're probably not replacing Rollins with Seager is most scouts--including probably many working for the defense-oriented Friedman--see Seager as a 3bman, not a SS. Seager is 6-4, 220, with a bad first step, and poor range at short. He's apparently survived there because of his cannon arm, which won't work at the major league level.

Also, considering Friedman's more-than-respectable history, I seriously doubt he is letting his team suffer just because he "doesn't want to admit he made a mistake." Firstly, the prospect he gave up for Rollins--Eflin--wasn't a blue chip one. Secondly, he most likely knows Seager isn't a viable replacement and trade alternatives won't come cheap now. So, the best option is to let Rollins work out of it while still providing some pop.

As to Mattingly, he wasn't Friedman's hire. So, he doesn't need to let him "take any blame" to manufacture a reason to fire him. He can justifiably do it any day.
