Cause i know few of you actually read John Garcia's blog

I'm posting it here:

Not sure what to think, seems to "mystery game" like to me ( which I don't like BTW). I may give it a shot, but I suspect I'm not going to like it.

It actually seems like SOM meets fantasy baseball to me and sounds pretty cool. Now, the actual player, and not just the card, will matter.

This had been discussed in the CDROM groups a while back, SOM was talking about an option that would apply updates to the player cards as the season progressed to emulate the players real performance. Basically you would have a card for each day of the season based on their stats as of that day.

It was met with a little interest but not a lot, definitely more criticism than excitement, I guess they decided to go ahead with the concept anyway. With so many better options to drive revenue, I am surprised that they are invested resources in this, the ROI on this one is going to be tough to deliver.

As I said above, the synthesis of fantasy baseball and SOM sounds like a fun and intriguing option to regular 20xx. I'm also glad they're more interested in giving us an interesting new product instead of just worrying about maximum revenue.

That being said, I'm not aware of the "better options" to drive revenue. It would be excellent if someone could actually say what these are; they sound interesting as well.

On the face of it it does not sound like a game I would have interest in. It sounds like the SOM version of Fantasy baseball.

I prefer knowing what the card (or possible mystery cards) are and not some unknown changing card based on what a player actually did the night before. I wonder if a player is injured in a real game if his injury rating shoots up to a 4, 5 or higher on his card.

However I realize that some are more interested in fantasy baseball than SOM and this morphed combination may be enjoyable for them.

Cool, I was hoping for something like this.

In my opinion, if they use actual results to regress the card carefully--it will not have 's the fantasy flavours (fantasy is more drastically changed by current results, and besides, it only follows 4-5 stats). Entirely depends on how they regress the performance.

I hope though that the "power column" will not change extensively across, as it is with the Duda example. Maybe it's capricious from my part, but I like to associate each player with its own column.

Also, I wonder why it couldn't be the same with defence, stealing....the nightmare of seeing a ss-3 getting a 4!!!

(but again, I wouldn't like seeing a player jumping down and up from 2 to 4 day in day out...I would expect SOM to take the call to give a 4 when SOM is pretty sure that the player performance over the year will merit a 4....)

After checking back the Duda example, I just realized that 5 days only separate the first Duda card from the third.

Too much fantasy flavour that I would like.

In my ideal world, I would rather perform the change this way

29/7 Duda is likely to have 20 homeruns in 600 AB this season (and the card reflects that)

31/7 Duda is lkely to have 23 homeruns in 600 AB this season

8/2 Duda is likely to have 26 homeruns in 600 AB this season

I'm pretty sure we won't get from 3.7 hr to 12.75 hr this way...

I'm glad about your excitement, Marc. I really do think it will be great for those of us, including myself, who actually keep track of players' performances during the season, as well as the moves, demotions, and promotions made by organizations. It will be particularly great for those of us who like to predict what players will break through or substantially regress. As to defense, I seriously doubt a player's range factor will change over the season. A players' e-rating, however, could see a considerable spike, as even defensive whizzes can have bad error streaks and/or seasons.

Power column? What does that have to do with anything? What column the power or hits come from seem totally irrelevant to me and in creating over 400 teams, I never once gave columns any consideration at all.

Dynamic card creation sounds pretty cool. I always wondered why in this day in age it took so long for cards to come out after the season. The process involved in evaluating defense, base stealing, bunting, H&R, base running, etc. is probably a factor in the delay. I think I remember reading about this aspect in the Strat-O-Matic Fanatics book.
