Need some feedback

This is my team at Miller Park. Thought the team would be better. (I cannot make any changes all the good players are gone). I am looking to see if my settings may need to be changed.

Tough one here Sarge...

I like your team. You have a nice balance of players.

You have a few guys not pulling their weight (Blanco/Pillar/Cano vs. RH's etc...)

Nothing much you can do here...

That's the problem, everyone thought the team would do well and it has under performed big time. Thought it would do well in Miller. Had Bautista but traded him for Heyward as he could not hit. Had Davis and Nolan A. and traded them for Donaldson and Kendry M. Who have done well. Just one of those seasons.

Hey it happens...

I once had a Strat team that won 97 games and missed out on the playoffs!

A few observations,

Overall, the team appeared balance, and maybe you would fight for the wildcard or even more if you didn't have these two severe losing streaks. I must also praise your ability to make trades, would love to see you in my league.

Yet, I think there are several tweaks that you could have done to make better. Not necessarily in order of importance:

1) From what I can see from your opening series, you started with a Blanco/Pillar combination in centerfield. There are many things to say about that combo: it's too balanced---you better have a 4R/4L platoon, that swings more to the extreme. It's two outstanding defensemen: you better optimize with a weaker defensive player and a stellar defensive player, so that one backups defensively the other, And Pillar's on-base was way too weak to be a lead-off. The lack of a true on-base machine in your lineup probably resulted in a few solo homeruns.

2) You started the season too weak vs lhp,and it shows in your stats. You seem to have made a few changes along the way to balance things out, like trading Gregorious for Iglesais. But considering the point above, I would have dropped Pillar for an outfielder threat vs lhp to go along with Blanco, someone like Santana or Blanks, to give a few names that sometimes go under the radar.

3) You paid a few millions to have Perez's -3 and Molina's -4, but your pitchers already have negative arms. Not sure if you know this, but the maximal combination you can have is -5---acts like a ceiling. So you didn't maximize your investment there.

4) You started the season with a lot of lefty pitchers--for no particular reasons it seems. You play in Miller park, which is balanced lefty-right ratio, and from a quick look to your divisional opponents, they appear a bit stronger vs lhp. Since this is a 100M leagues, owners are more willing to spend some extra dough to have lefty killers, so usually teams are better vs lhp. If there's no real obvious advantage to have lefties, when playing in 100M or more, I prefer to limit the use of lefty pitchers---one in fourth, and have them only in the bullpen. Buehrle was especially hit---29 homeruns, and his card does have some BP homeruns vs lhp.

5) You didn't win the homerun battle (allowed more homeruns than you hit them). In Miller, it's crucial you win that war. This suggests to me that your pitching staff was not the best fit for that stadium.

6) I wonder if you don't have your starters pitch too long. With the quality of your bullpen, you should have a quick exit, especially for the weaker starters, and rely on your relievers more.

7) Looking at your trades, overall, you seem to have done a good job---except for getting Heyward. His card, in my opinion, is one of the most overpriced card, especially in your stadium. But I guess you have to make compromise to get some good trades!!

Thanks for the feedback.

I keeping wondering if my lineups are set correctly? I thought trading for Sale, Kluber and Heyward would help as well. I want to make a push but it is getting late. FYI, I like to trade if it will help me and is fair for the other team.

I am not sure why I am bothering to add anything Marc said...but maybe just a point of emphasis. The easiest way to create value in this game is to get a high hr ballpark like Miller and then load up with a bunch of 7-8 bp hr guys and bunch of pitchers that have low bp hrs. Why? Strat doesn't evaluate a guy with a 8 bp hr as if he played in a home ballpark like Miller. Every player you select for Miller who has 8 bp hr is worth more than you paid for because he is going to get more hrs than Strat evaluates him for. Teams start out equal; this is the simplest way to create a team that has more value/higher competitive strength than other teams.

You only have 4 position guys that do that--7-9 is a good number for Miller, I think. You just can't lose the hr battle in Miller and be successful. You're on pace to hit 225 hrs and I think 250 is probably on the low side of what you need. Getting back to the value thing does your team have more bp hrs on average than other teams? If not, then you have not used your ballpark to create value vis-a-vis other teams.

Creating value in singles parks is not as straightforward. You could create some value if the park gives up singles to one side (AT&T). Otherwise, it comes down to strategies like having high-average, high-double teams that score more runs in a low-power environment and having pitchers that give up low-hits and give up bp hr that gets knocked down in a low-power park. Conversely, you want to avoid guys with like 4 hr, 7 bp hrs that are probably over-valued in a low power park.

I had:

C. Davis: 11-35 .187
N. Arenado: 16-38 .283
J. Bautista: 23-73 .222

Traded for Donaldson, Heyward, Morales, and Iglesias

I Had:

Bumgarner: 7-12 34 HR Allowed (21 actual)
J. Zimmerman: 4-8 18 HR Allowed (24 actual)
Quintana: 4-5 12 HR Allowed (16 actual)

Traded for Sale and Kluber

We are using Max Injuries so I did not want to take big risk on Risk/Reward players. Tried to get low HR pitchers a well. Just one of those seasons.
