Pitcher Prefs

PostWed May 11, 2016 9:59 am

In this game Bumgarner pitched until F1. I have him set at slow hook and IBB less. I have "9th inning+ and Tied" set to Familia and no one else - this was the situation when the inning started, was still the situation when MadBum dropped below F9, and Familia was available.

So my question is: Is there some way to guarantee that my starter is pulled as soon as he goes below F9? If not, is there a way to make it more likely to happen, preferably while still having slow hook enabled?

Thanks!

I'm still figuring things out but I think setting him at something like F7 and then quick hook will get what you want.

Most likely the reason was that your bullpen was fatigued. Your pen is not deep. Ross pitched 3 inning the previous game. Boyer got to F0 the game before that. The settings are not used every time. HAL was preserving Familia for extra innings. The best way is to construct your bullpen to have fresh arms. For example, you generally don't want your long RP (R2 or R3) to be the cheapest guy.

Setting Bumgarner on slow hook is telling Hal to do the opposite of what you want, will keep him in the game longer, often past his fatigue point. Set him for quick hook, he'll still stay in up to his fatigue point if he's pitching ok, but much less likely to stay in past that point.

If you think he's coming out too soon on quick hook, then remove the quick hook, but definitely don't set him on slow hook if you don't want him to stay in past F-9.

The F-setting is supposed to override all other settings, so setting him at F-7 would make him more likely to stay in past F-9 even on quick hook...which might indeed be what you want if he's pitching well and your bullpen is fatigued.

This is what I have found to be true. I generally have 2 good starters that I set for F0 and HAL doesn't remove them for anyone even Wade Davis until they reach F0. This leaves my relief staff intact for the SP that isn't very good. If you set a pitcher for a certain F rating he will stay in there that long most if not all of the time.
