Long time board-game player/ 1st time online

I was a hard-core Strat baseball board game addict in the 80s so I'm very excited to revisit it now. In looking over the rules and posts about the online version of the game, this seems very similar to WhatIf Sports which I've played before and enjoyed.

Could some vets who have played both games advise me as to what the differences are between the two other than there being ballpayer "cards" of course and "dice rolls" affecting outcomes?

You'll get some info over that site. A crash course about Strat if you need a refresher and some highlights about playing the online/CD-Rom game vs the board game. Also, on this forum, in the strategy section, you might find some

I never played whatif so can't compared them.

For me there is no comparision to online strat and whatif sports. Strat is largely based on the strat cards and if you were a board game addict you should be very familar with what that means.

At whatif sports you get a name and some stats and little else. From that you build a team with little knowledge of what the underlying simulation looks like. If having names from childhood on your team is all that matters then whatif sports is the better game for you. But if you are looking for some semblance of what you experienced in the 80s playing the board game then online strat will be much more enjoyable by a country mile.

Also, while it is not like it used to be in my experience there is more interaction among those who play the game here in the online strat world than there is in the whatif sports world. Though I admit has been a few years since I played whatif sports and things may have changed/improved there. And I admit the participation on the forums is not close to what it was. But even so for me the forums are a big part of the overall experience.

Hi guys!! I too was a board game strat addict but from the 90s. Revisited strat in early 2000s in the online cd rom game. Haven't played in about 14 years. Ran into an old buddy from HS and we started talking about it. Looking foward to see how this trial league goes to whether I go full out. Stats are stats but I'm not familiar with a lot of today's players. Don't keep up with it like I used to.

That is one of the great things about strat whether board game or cdrom or online. It is not just numbers and stats. The cards allow you to get a visual of what goes in to those stats and what made a great player great. And as you look at the cards while putting a team together the old memories of when you played the board game will filter back in.

It will be that tie in that will hook you. It will be the slight deviations from the pure board game and that emperor like control that will frustrate you the most.

This is what I always tell the newbies and the burned out vets. Strat is a great game. It has some flaws. If you can look past the flaws your can sit back, buckle your seat belt, and get ready for a great ride with lots of fun and amusement.

I compare it to syfy where you have to get past that suspension of didbelief to really enjoy a star wars movie or whatever. And you will have to get past a few flaws or perceived flaws to enjoy strat. But if you can get ready for years of one blast of a good time.

Welcome to the game. Anything we can do to help you have fun (short of something that costs me money  ) holler and betting the old timers will line up to help.

Thanks for the feedback and welcome! My trial league just kicked off yesterday. Just looking over my game feedback now in the play-by-play.
