Platoons 2015 set

PostSun Jul 10, 2016 10:10 pm

What are good examples of platoon combos in the 2015 set? It's my 1st 2015 season, and I see a bunch of combos.

1. DH Jaso/Flores
2. C Conger/Hannigan
3. 1B/DH Lind/Martinez
4. 3B/DH Escobar/Lowrie
5. OF Schwarber/Ruggiano
6. OF Hernandez/Ethier
7. OF Den Dekker/Young
8. OF Melky/Hicks
9 OF Peralta/Rayburn
10 OF Gose/Ozuna

Have other teams had luck with any of these? Are there other ideas on great platoons?

I think the best Platoon for the Money is Raburn 1.31M / Ethier 2.67M--can play either RF or LF also--though you have to put them high on your list, especially Raburn.

I really like the combo as they save you money for other spots.

I had them both for one team, drafted them both for 75% of my teams and usually miss Raburn--I refuse to put him in the top 4 or 5 just to get him, I've had better luck with Ethier but still miss him half the time.

I have had decent luck with Eaton 3.343R and Pagan .57 3L in CF. Both are 4 range, but 3.91 allows for a lot of cap elsewhere.

Also, at catcher - I like either Perez (Sal) 3.714R or McCann(Brian) 4.01E platooned with Ianetta 1.424L for pretty good production. With McCann, Ianetta can be used as a DH vs the leftside. With Perez, he can catch or DH if you have another 3rd catcher vs the leftside.

McCann and Ianetta also can cover 1B if needed.

Speaking of catching platoons- I like to use Sandy Leon v RH and Jesus Sucre v LH. When I use this particular platoon I also carry an additional 500,000 catcher that has a fairly neutral split. The offensive production in minimal but, at 1,280,000 for the trio, I have more cap space to boost production at other positions. I tend to be more defensive minded than most and this inexpensive trio does a nice job limiting base stealers. Nothing drives me crazier than allowing my opponent to run wild on the bases. When walks/singles turn into doubles, the double play is basically eliminated and the number of hits needed to score a run greatly decreases. I may be wrong in my thinking, but I feel that this low budget trio benefits my pitching staff enough to justify their lack of offense. Any offense they happen to provide is a bonus. Also- with 3 catchers on the roster it's less risky to pinch hit for them in the later innings. I'd love to hear any contrarian thoughts on my reasoning. Be well...

Some contrarian thoughts ;-)

I like the idea of spending almost 100% on defense for your last spot---in recent teams, I have had Galvis (1.04M at ss) or Sogard (0.54M at 2nd) hit in the last offensive slot---with the logic you describe of getting cheap good defense and spending big dough on other players. But I don't consider catching as important as ss or 2b.

First, negative hold can come from your pitchers' hold, rather than from your catcher. As you may know, by rule, the combination of hold ratings cannot be below -5. If Sale is pitching, then your catcher's arm is "effectively" only -1, not -3. And having a combo of -5 will prevent stolen bases, true, but it will also prevent caught stealings. So personnally, as long I keep a 2:1 ratio of allowed SB:CS, I feel at ease with having a catcher arm that is just average or worse. And Hal is not particularly clever with the stolen base strategy. It's far from automatic that a single will turn into a double because of a base runner. And besides, if there is not two outs, there is no double play to be saved. Overall, I would be surprised if you can get more than 20 double plays over a full year because you have a stellar defensive catcher. Maybe in ATG, but certainly not in 2015.

To come back to the platoons.

Raburn is your ultimate platoon guy, but it seems to me that I wouldn't match him with Peralta. Peralta vs lhp is okay, nothing great, but still 30+ onbase, similar defense as Raburn. Of course, Raburn has a better card vs lhp than Peralta, but the uplift you get is not so great once you factor the at-bats that Raburn will undeniably get vs rhp relievers.

My ratings have Peralta at 5.75M in neutral park. Combined with Raburn, I have the platoon at 6.10M, for an uplift of 0.35M.

Compare that with De Aza whose card vs lhp is really bad. I have DeAza, as a full-time player, at 1.99M, not particularly a good buy considering that he costs 2.47M. But when combined with Raburn, I have that platoon worth 4.01M, a 2M uplift. Hence, I have DeAza/Raburn (worth 4.01M vs cost 3.78) as slightly a better choice than Peralta all alone (5.75M vs cost 5.60M), and as more effective than Peralta/Raburn in terms of getting the best out of your buck.

The best platoon I have with Raburn is DenDekker, whose name already appeared at labear list. I also have Stubbs/Raburn as one of most efficient platoon. For the record, I used a Stubbs/Pompey and was quite satisfied by it--they were also covering ground on other outfield positions for injury-prone players.

When using platoons with injury-prone players, like Dickerson, I like using a 3L-4L player rather than a 9L, so I prefer using a Santana/Dickerson platoon.

I like using platoons with players under 1M, so I would put Olt/Ike Davis, Sogard/Beckham at the top of my platoon list, with Aybar/Segura not too far behind.

Thank you MARCPELLETIER for your contrarian reply to my post. I'm fairly new to Strat 365 and still learning all the small details of the game. Although it makes perfect sense, I was unaware that the pitcher hold and catcher arm max out at -5. Knowing that certainly broadens my catcher options...
You also make a great point in regards to creating opportunities for a caught stealing. It's something I never thought about and is yet another factor that I've omitted when designing my teams.
My first few teams consistently got burned by SB in late inning situations because I ignored pitcher holds and catcher arms. I'd have a RP with a +9 who would allow the first hitter to get on in a tie game. The runner would then steal 2nd & 3rd and I'd end up losing on a game ending sac fly. I made sure to correct that problem with my subsequent teams. However- it looks like I may have over-corrected.
Anyway- thanks again for your feedback. Your response has helped me take another step forward. And as always, stay well.

I tend to like to spend 4-5.5M on catcher - Especially if they make a decent to good contribution to offense. There aren't really a lot of great base stealers in this set. So catcher's arm strength doesn't come into play as many times over a 162 game season as their offensive contribution will. I'm talking a -2 to +1 who hits well. As Marc pointed out, pitcher's hold ratings can really help you out. And if you have a good to great hitting catcher that isn't as good defensively, you can have a C with good arm strength as a late inning backup when your setup and closer are in and games are on the line.

But I think to give up an out with catcher's who don't hit is counterproductive. Just an opinion. ;)
