If a league is private, then generally it has the required managers already in mind. That is, the league is made private because they don't want uninvited outside managers joining them.
In the case that a private league needs an extra manager or two, they generally post on the boards and send a private message when somebody responds.
Unless you signed up on the boards for a theme league or some other league requiring password protection, you should just look to join an available open league.
