With signing of Napoli and the 2 year extension of Beltre Gallo is now a man without a position.
Pretty much a done deal he starts this season at AAA and barring injury spends the entire year there.

Does anyone know at what point he runs out of options and the Rangers are forced to either make room, trade him, or risk losing him in waivers with nothing to show for it?

My understanding is that once he was put on the 40 man roster he could be optioned three times to the minors. Had to be for at least 20 days and player can go up and down a number of times in a season and counts as one option.

Once they want to demote him a fourth season he would have to clear waivers. I know Gallo can be optioned this year but don't know if he has years beyond this one.

My recollection is from a few years ago so rules may have changed.

So first year in pro ball was 2012. I think it is 3 years you can be in minors before you have to be on 40 man or risk rule 5.
So that would mean he was placed on 40 man before the 2015 season which is the year they called him up due to Beltre injury. So 15, 16, and now this year would be his 3 option years. So he could spend all year at AAA and the Rangers hand would be forced in 2018. I am really going to be watching close to see if they play him at first, third, or LF in Round Rock. Beltre signed to a 2 year extension. That would be convenient if they plan on transitioning to Gallo as future third baseman in 2018. Not sure I see any other promising options at third in the system.

I am thinking barring injury Gallo will not see Arlington until September this year. Main reason I am thinking about options though is if he has no options for 2018 they have to make a decision this year if his future is here or if they want to cash in on the trade value. Main thing I do not want here is to see him leading the league in HRs or just going off for 40 or something like a couple other recent former Rangers, especially if all they end up with is a reliever they are only going to give 30 inning or something to.

If Gallo doesn't improve on his .240 AAA batting average, no matter how many HRs he hits, he may have a hard time getting MLB call ups.
However, if I was running my Twins and I could get my hands on Gallo for a reasonable price, he would be out in Left Field on opening day!!! IMO, the Twins don't have a single legit MLB outfielder at any position, so what the heck!
If Kepler/Buxton can live up to expectations and Gallo hits 40 HRs and not suck too bad out in LF, I think the Twins could avoid 100 losses in 2017. I can only dream!

Mike Napoli was horrible down the stretch last season. He had a career year, ideally you would want him to play everyday versus lefties and not every day versus right handed pitchers.... I don't know much about Gallo.

Watch Buxton and Kepler go off and have breakthrough seasons....and prove us wrong! Still need a 3rd guy.

Gallo will get a shot at the LF job apparently. If he hits .240 and continues the same walk rate he will still be very valuable based on OB & HR rates. A slash line of .250/.360/.530 attainable for him, and that will play at any position. Even if he comes in a little under that at .240/.340/.500 still plenty valuable in today's hitting climate. The issue is whether he will get regular ABs at the big league level or not.
