I don't know if Freeman is referring to this source, but if you use NERP, you can get defensive ratings from Offense vs. Defense in Strat-O-Matic by Dean Carrano,

Reyes is a cf-3e3 [4.3], lf-3e3 [3.2], and rf-3e3 [3.2]
Where the numbers in brackets are the defensive NERP allowed.
So, Gardner in LF [-1.3] + Reyes in CF [4.3] = 3 defensive NERP allowed.
And Gardner in CF [0.8} + Reyes in LF [3.2] = 4 defensive NERP allowed.
Surprisingly, it's better to have Gardner in left.
