MLB Trivia

PostMon Mar 21, 2022 9:36 pm

Since this month the challenge is stolen bases, I have a trivia question involving team stolen bases in a single season.

Which post WW2 baseball team had eight players with 20 or more stolen bases in a single season?

Does this involve Herb Washington? Based upon that hunch, I'll guess the Oakland A's sometime in the early-mid 70's.

SOM had a special rule for Herb, but I don't remember what is was (heck it was 50 or so years ago)

good trivia question. the 1980 Astros had 6 players over 20 SB's (Morgan, Cabell, Cruz, Cedeno, Puhl, and Landestoy). I assume the right answer would be a team from a turf field in 1970's/1980's when SB's were a bigger part of the overall game.. but can't find which team had 8 players over 20 steals..

Good guess, it involves a Washington, but not Herb.

Well, with your hint, I guessed UL Washington, Mr. Toothpick himself. Those early 80s Royals were pretty fast and had the added bonus of a catcher who I know sole over 20 a few times (Wathan). But nope, they never even came close. Having Willie Mays Aikens, aging guys like Hal McRae, George Brett, Amos Otis and a 3rd outfielder like Pat Sheriden or Jerry Martin pretty much ruined any chance.

Those were some pretty great teams though.

The Claudell Washington clue helped me. The 1976 Oakland A's?

My all-time favorite baseball book (actually my all-time favorite book. Period.), "The Game According to Syd", written by then-A's Farm Director, Syd Thrift, discussed that team and Charlie Finley's philosophy to use speed and the stolen base to create runs without big bopper hitters once free agency became reality. That philosophy was then taken up a notch when Rickey Henderson stole bases like nobody else ever did under the Billy Ball philosophy.

That '76 A's team included Don Baylor, who stole over 40 bases, too.

I'll guess one of Whitey Herzog's St. Louis Cardinals team from the 1980's. Vince Coleman and friends.

The same question was posted in the ATG forum. Someone looked it up and posted that the manager was Chuck Tanner. So yea. That's it.

Always been a big Herb Washington fan because of his unique role in baseball history. Have always kept his baseball card in a special place as his listed position was Pinch Run. Would be a nice add to the ATG set.

Yes, you are correct it was the 1976 Oakland As who had eight players with more than 20 stolen bases.
