Newbie looking for roster opinions

PostTue Oct 16, 2012 9:39 am

This is my first time playing ATG and looks like there is an insane amount of ATG expertise on this forum. Can anyone give my roster a look and make some recommendations?

Let me start by saying that in the long run making roster moves in season will (in general) hurt your team. The loss of salary cannot be replaced. I rarely make unplanned moves after the season starts. (Exceptions being for long injury on occasion, adjustments at game 19 (when I leave division games) if my division is markedly different than outside divisions, adjustment around game 129 (same reason), or if I see a major desirable player dropped that I just "must have").

That said, dumping Seaver for Dickey was absolutely right (although doing that preseason would be better).
I am a big fan of Dickey and I like Nellie and Pinky. Wills is worth more than his salary on both of his years. Trosky is good if you are seeing 75% RHP or more. Your outfield would not meet my desires (but could work out).

Pedro and Tiant should be great. Whitey is just fine, expect Catfish to struggle mightily unless you are seeing many RH leaning bats and few BP HR parks.

You also NEED some relief pitching.

My suggestions - consider where you might want to get the cash for a decent relief pitcher (I have several I like at different cap levels, but without researching who is available or knowing how much you want to spend it is hard to name players)...

I would probably use the 550k in hand to upgrade davis to Kenny Rogers.

Then... [i]think about [/i ]moving Hunter or combining Hunter and Ford for $9 mil to get a different duo (say 5.83 Beazley and 3.34 Higbe plus cash - or something similar).

There are lots of options, but try to make a plan and then stick with it. Repeated moves over the season will hurt your chances.

hackra is right - you definitely need some better relief pitching - not a lot, but some, and Catfish will likely get rocked especially in any kind of park that gives up many HR's. But absolutely making many changes during the season will kill you as the prices on the players are fairly accurate and if you have a 70 million dollar roster it cannot compete with an 80 million dollar roster over time. So if you are going to make a move you have to be very careful to minimize the loss of money and then plan to stick with the move all season. And it is a long season - patience is a virtue!

I think u should use this team as a trial - trade in Tiant for a 5 mil pitcher and get a righty reliever to replace your R specialist who has BP HRs on the right side - never good with a righty reliever under $2mil.

who do u have playing CF - this s/b a 1 or a 2 with an arm

Thanks for your input guys. After going through most of this forum I made a lot of adjustements. I know I lose Salary everytime I make changes but after doing more research I figured I would go ahead and use this season to get to know the ATG cards better. I've been playing mystery card sets for a long time and you have to dump and run players with those sets. So here's what I did:

I dropped George Foster, Seaver, Whitey Ford, Jeff Burroughs, Carl Furillo and freed up a ton of Salary
I picked up Bill Dickey $10.38, Pujols $7.88, Radatz $4.59 Hogg $3.74 Hughson $3.62 and updgraded my outfield defense and arms with Lewis Duffy $2.96, Curt Flood $3.83 and Hank Bauer $2.86. I only had a little bit of salary left for a DH so I went with Don Baylor $.91

Hogg got lit up last night but it was against the best offense of the league: Hornsby, Matthews sim card, Arky Vaughn. But Radatz paid off in relief.

Thanks guys.
