*Hurricane Sandy - Please Help*

Hey Guys.

I just want to ask everyone, if possible, to donate any clothing/food or money to the Hurricane Sandy flood victims. I live in Staten Island. Most of the East and South coast of S.I was devastated. On an island surrounded by water, I was lucky enough to live in a neighborhood just far enough away from the ocean to not have much damage done to my home. Many of my of Staten Island brethern were not as lucky. I have been down to the marina area in Great Kills (less than a mile from my home) and have seen huge boats moved out of the water by the power of the ocean now sitting 2-3 blocks inland. Some neighborhoods are still flooded days later. Thousands of homes were destroyed here, not only along the shore, but almost a mile inland as well. There are thousands of homeless people now, not only in NYC, but all over the east coast. Americans are always willing to help out people in other countries in times of despair. Now is the time to step up and help our own when it counts. Even if it's only $1, anything you can do would be great.

I am just greatful both of my sisters and their families who also live on SI are ok. My sister, brother-in-law and my niece and nephews were with me Monday night. My niece received a frantic FB message from her HS friend to everyone on the girls list that her family was trapped in the house with 5-6ft of water inside and that the house was moving (coming off the foundation). shortly afterward my niece received another email saying a boat was coming down the middle of the street toward the house to rescue them. The next day, we found out this was happening all over the SI shore.

hope all is slowly getting better. I have family in the central part off victory blvd...felt like I was making things worse by competing for gas.

Dont apologize for posting something civil...hoping all gets close to normal soon...granted it wont ever exactly be the same.

and for all those that say folks ignored an evac order--not true. Only the coastal area was given the evac order. The state/local government in NY (notably Bloomberg) was too busy saying "it's only a cat 1" without doing any critical thinking as to the characteristics of the storm. too worried about being indecisive on the marathon and losing money (which is what Cuomo said about allowing gas suppliers in)

I don't think at this point it matters if people ignored evac orders. They still lost their homes wheter they stayed or left.

For the most part, Staten Islanders are used to having flooded basements with 1 to 2 feet of water. And blackouts are a normal occurrence here after bad storms. It's just a given. I think if people had any clue there was going to be 10-12 feet of water headed towards their homes, that they would not have stayed. This hurricane was so powerful it grounded a 70 ton tanker on a Staten island beach. To be honest, if I lived near the beach, I may not have left at first. In the 14yrs I have lived on SI, I have never seen the ocean get anywhere Father Capadano Blvd (the first street after the board walk in South Beach, SI). Who would have ever thought 10+ feet of water would make it almost a mile inland to Hylan Blvd?

Like I said, it really doesn't make a difference now. Some people unfortunately lost their lives, thousands lost their homes.
